Support group available Church of the Presentation in Upper Saddle River is offering a support program for individuals going through separation and divorce. Participants will learn the process of change, communication, and self-awareness while discovering a path for human growth and self-esteem. Teams of trained facilitators will assist in coaching the emotions of grief, anger, guilt, loneliness, fear, anxiety, depression, forgiveness, and self-love. The new session will be held Sept. 20 through Nov. 22 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Gathering Room North. The church is located at 271 West Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. Register for fall tennis clinics Registration is now being accepted for the Upper Saddle River fall tennis clinics. There will be one five-week session to be held at the Wickersham Tennis Courts, located in front of the Reynolds School. The clinics will be held on Wednesdays beginning Sept. 8. Basketball coaches sought The Upper Saddle River Basketball Association is seeking adults to coach the second, third, and fourth grade instructional programs and the fifth/sixth, seventh/eighth, and high school recreation programs for girls and boys. Festivities will held from 2 to 7 p.m. (Rain date: Sept. 12.) Food wristbands may be purchased in advance at the Upper Saddle River Library or at Upper Saddle River Borough Hall for $30 for a family up to six, $10 for an individual, and are free for seniors (age 62 and up) and children under six years of age. Tickets will also be available the
day of the event. Activities will include family games, face painting, carnival rides, stage performances, and fun for all. Beefsteak to benefit local family The Zion Lutheran Church in Saddle River is hosting a beefsteak fundraiser in the memory of Midland Park resident and church parishioner Greg Raffaelli on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 6:30 at the church, 96 East Allendale Road in Saddle River. In addition to the dinner, the event will include prizes, music, and a sale of baked goods. Tickets are $35 for adults; $15 for children ages five through 12. Children under five will be admitted free. Attendees may send a self-addressed stamped envelope and a check made out to: Zion Lutheran Church; memo “Raffaelli Fundraiser.” Be sure to indicate the number of tickets requested and include a phone number. Newcomers Club to meet The Saddle River Valley Newcomers Club will hold its Kick Off meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 14. The club welcomes those who have just moved into the area and those who have been living here for decades. Members receive a monthly newsletter with the club’s activities and events. Watercolors on exhibit The gallery of the Upper Saddle River Library is currently displaying watercolors by Gloria Donoghue. Donoghue’s exhibit takes the viewer on a journey from the Catskill farmlands, to the warmth of France and Italy. Her use of color is determined by mood of the landscape. The USR Library Solarium gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is located at 245 Lake Street.
Structured soccer instruction offered For the first time, Upper Saddle River will offer a structured, small group soccer clinic for special needs children in kindergarten through grade two. Clinics will be held on Saturdays for 45 minutes. The players will warmup and participate in drills and scrimmages. Breaks and other accommodations will be made. Each participant will require a parent shadow for all clinics. Players will receive a T-shirt and soccer ball. Siblings are welcome to join in the fun. Lions plan benefit Golf Outing The Saddle River Valley Lions Club’s annual Golf Outing will be held Monday, Sept. 13 at the Falkirk Estate and Country Club in Central Valley, New York. This event has been renamed the Herb Bodensiek Golf Classic to honor the club’s longest serving member (over 40 years). The cost of $95 includes golf, cart, all-you-can-eat barbecue on the deck, prizes, and a donation to the Lions Club campaign to fight blindness. A “shotgun” start will begin at 9:30 a.m. and barbecue and awards will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Prizes will be awarded in various categories. There will also be a contest with prizes and an auction. The Saddle River Valley Lions Club primarily serves the communities of Mahwah, Ramsey, Saddle River and Upper Saddle River. Members of the club come from 13 different communities. Donations sought for homeless The Saddle River Valley Junior Woman’s Club will be teaming up with Immaculate Heart Academy’s Chapter of Midnight Run to help the homeless. The Juniors are seeking donations of new travel size shampoos, lotion, mouthwash, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shaving creme and razors; and new men’s boxers, socks, and undershirts. The club will also accept gently used fall/winter men’s clothing and shoes. New women’s undergarments will also be accepted. Midnight Run is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a common ground between the housed and the homeless. Several times a year, Midnight Run travels into New York and hands out food, clothing, and toiletry packages to homeless individuals. Donations may be brought to the USR Library on Lake Street.
