The borough council agreed to designate the back wall of the second-floor council chambers, near the clock, for such displays. The plaques will have to be uniform and follow borough specifications. The borough will place the order from a designated supplier, and the organization will pay the vendor. The decision came at the request of the Chamber of Commerce, which had asked to display a perpetual plaque to which the names of the top finishers from Waldwick in the annual 5K event would be added each year. The plaque has been donated by Plaza Jewelers of Waldwick. At a council meeting last month, council members had been divided on whether to allow the plaques at all. Councilman Don Sciolaro said that it would set a precedent to allow non-municipal plaques in the building. He suggested that a plaque where the event took place might be more appropriate. Councilman Tom Giordano was sympathetic to helping the chamber find a location to highlight residents’ accomplishments. He and Councilman Chuck Farricker offered to work on a solution, recommending the “clock wall” to the council last week and even going one step further. “We would also give them the opportunity to unveil the plaque at a council meeting so this way we can honor them and they can see how their government works,” said Giordano. “After all, the administration building is not just our building; it is everyone’s, and we should honor it with our honors,” he added. Other plaques already hang in town hall, in the hallway near the entrance to the council chambers. One plaque memorializes residents who died in combat and another those who served in Operation Desert Storm. The Citizen of the Year plaque displays 38 names going back to 1972. And there is also a framed piece of slate from the roof of the Pentagon salvaged from the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack.
