Allendale August 18, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 7 Council handles personnel issues, flooding concerns by John Koster The Allendale Borough Council has introduced an ordinance that would provide for a director of public safety. Under this ordinance, Allendale could have a director of public safety or a police chief, but not both simultaneously. Police Chief Robert Herndon will be retiring this later this month, and Police Detective Al McCarthy is now the senior officer on duty. McCarthy will run the department on a day-to-day basis until the new chief or director is appointed. Mayor Barra said last week that the police department will be maintained at the present level for the foreseeable future. The structure would be as follows: a chief or director, four sergeants, eight patrolman, a detective, and four dispatchers. All positions except one dispatcher’s job are presently filled, and there are no plans for new hiring, other than the chief or director and one dispatcher. Mayor Barra said the study of possible affiliation with other local police departments for some shared services would be completed time in September. “There has been no decision made, or even any discussion,” Barra said. The council also introduced an ordinance to provide for an addition to the borough staff: a secretary who will attend Allendale Planning Board meetings and take minutes at $50 a session, unless the meetings run into overtime. Attempting to reconstruct the minutes of the meeting after the fact by listening to audio tapes has not worked well, according to Mayor Vince Barra and Borough Administrative Officer Gwen McCarthy. The part-time position, they believe, will lead to great efficiency. In other business, residents who live on Franklin Turnpike asked if the borough could provide some help to relieve flooding after heavy rains. The flooding not only leads to dangerous motoring situations, but caused signs that read “Flood Prone Area” (continued on page 8) Helping hands The Allendale Newcomers Club recently met with the Concerned Citizens of Allendale, the nonprofit organization that owns and operates The John Fell House, to discuss how the two groups can support each other. The Newcomers Club donated $500 to the Concerned Citizens of Allendale to help with the restoration of the house.
