Ho-Ho-Kus August 18, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 Borough prepares to renew Cablevision contract by Jennifer Crusco Cablevision of Oakland, LLC and the Borough of HoHo-Kus are prepared to enter into a new, non-exclusive 10-year contract for cable television service. The borough council recently approved a resolution/written report that grants a municipal consent ordinance to Cablevision to operate in Ho-Ho-Kus, introduced a related ordinance, and held a public hearing. Several members of the public were in the audience when the matter was opened for public comment, but no one spoke. The ordinance concerning the contract will be considered for final passage at the council’s Aug. 24 meeting. Cablevision representative Gary Shaw attended the public hearing, offering brief comments regarding the proposed contract. The previous 10-year agreement expired in November 2009. Ho-Ho-Kus Borough Attorney David Bole noted that, under the new agreement, Cablevision will provide a technology grant of $5,000 over the 10-year franchise. A sum of $1,400 will be provided during the first year, and the balance will be provided in annual installments of $400 over the following nine years. Shaw pointed out that the borough could use the technology grant to purchase equipment to add Ho-Ho-Kus information to a local access channel. The resolution concerning the Cablevision agreement notes that Cablevision provides channels 76 and 77, which are dedicated to public, education, and governmental access. These channels may be used by schools, libraries, governmental organizations, religious organizations, and other community groups. Councilman Gordon Hamm asked Shaw if the borough had a “me too” clause to allow the borough to potentially receive other unforeseen benefits from Cablevision that the company might offer to another municipality. “I’d like to see something like that. It protects the town,” Hamm said. Bole and Shaw both said such a clause could be negotiated. According to the resolution concerning the Cablevision agreement, the borough “will retain the five-year review clause, which mirrors the existing language in the previous franchise document for the 10-year franchise renewal with the borough’s right to review the agreement after the fifth year for material compliance.” The related ordinance (#969) further states that, if the borough conducts the review and finds the company has (continued on page 23) Roundup® Weed & Grass Killer Ready-To-Use Pump ‘N Go ™ Sprayer  APPLY WHEN WEEDS ARE ACTIVE & GROWING  USE ON PATIOS, WALKWAYS, DRIVEWAYS, AROUND SHRUBS AND TREES  FOAMING TECHNOLGY LETS YOU SEE WHERE YOU SPRAY Mon-Wed 7:30-6, Thurs & Fri 7:30-8 Sat 8-5 OPEN SUNDAY 9-3 MAKE WEEDS AND UNWANTED GRASS GO AWAY!
