Local students exhibit photographs Photographs by members of the Waldwick High School Photography Club will be on display at the Waldwick Public Library through Tuesday, Aug. 31. Featured in the exhibit are 14 colorful images of bridges, Ferris wheels, sunsets, a variety cityscapes, and scenes from the New Jersey shore. Contributors to the exhibit are Ashley Davies, Courtney Dock, Elyssa Giordano, Alexa Iannantuano, Christine Laganella, Haley McClelland, Stephanie Montana, Ali Moore, and Eric Thom. Under the guidance of world cultures teacher Ted Opderbeck, the Waldwick High School Photography Club meets regularly during the school year. Club members learn about photographic techniques, share their photos on a website, display their work in a gallery at the high school, and have visited New York City, Boston, and the New Jersey shore region. Chamber to meet The Waldwick Chamber of Commerce will hold its next general meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 18 at 8:30 a.m. at Massage Envy, 26 Franklin Turnpike, Waldwick. The Waldwick Chamber meets the third Wednesday of each month. All members are welcome to attend. Marriage counseling available Waldwick United Methodist Church is offering Christian marriage counseling to couples who are seeking help with their marriages, and to those planning to enter into marriage. Future Daisy Scouts sought The Waldwick Girl Scouts organization invites all girls who will be entering kindergarten to be part of the Girl Scouting experience. A registration for Daisy Girl Scouts will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Waldwick Ambulance Corps building located at 20 Whites Lane in Waldwick. Scouting provides opportunities for girls to develop friendships while participating in field trips, sports skill building clinics, community service projects, cultural exchanges, and environmental stewardships. Film series features famed directors Waldwick Public Library hosts screenings of classic films on Thursdays at 2 p.m. A brief introduction, setting the film in its historical context, will precede each screening. The theme for the month of August is Famous Directors, and the schedule of screenings is as follows: Aug. 19, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Strangers on a Train” (1951); and Aug. 26, “Great Expectations” directed by David Lean (1946). Classic film screenings are free and open to the public. Registration is not necessary; however arrival before 2 p.m. is encouraged. The library is located at 19 East Prospect Street in Waldwick. For more information, call (201) 652-5104. Lions host Golf Classic The Waldwick Lions Club will once again host its annual team Golf Classic at Bowling Green Golf Club on Monday, Sept. 20. The event will begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
The event, a team and best-ball outing, will begin with skills competitions such as breaking a pane of glass by chipping, and putting contests. The entry fee includes free range balls, full breakfast, and lunch and libations along with giveaways and oncourse performance prizes. Funds raised will go toward the more than $50,000 per year the Waldwick Lions Club donates to local causes and sightrelated charities. Ambulance corps seeks new recruits The Waldwick Volunteer Ambulance Corps, which is comprised of trained members who provide the community with high quality ambulance service at no charge to the patient or the patient’s family, is seeking new volunteers. Since 1952, the Waldwick Ambulance Corps has been a privately-run volunteer service that depends upon volunteers to provide emergency care to the residents of Waldwick. Applications to join the corps are available at the Waldwick Police Department. Free swine flu vaccines available Borough Nurse Carol Shepard has available a supply of H1N1 vaccine to be administered to anyone who has not received it. There is absolutely no charge, and no insurance or Medicare cards are needed. Call Shepard at the health center, (201)444-3914 to make an appointment. All ages are welcome. Pool registration update Registration for the Waldwick Municipal Pool is underway. Registration may be completed by downloading the form from www.waldwicknj.org. Forms and payment can be returned by mail.
First time registrants will need to do so in person at the pool office in order to have badge photos taken. Permit costs for residents are $65 for adults, $60 for children four through 17; and $55 for seniors. The fee for non-resident adults and children will be $150 with the exception of children age three and younger. ESL programs break for summer The ESL Conversation Group and English Language Learning activities class that meet weekly at the Waldwick Public Library have concluded. Meetings will resume on Monday, Sept. 13 at 10:15 a.m. and Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m., respectively. The library’s ESL programs are free and open to adults who want assistance with learning and speaking English. For more information, call (201) 652-5104. New Rotary Club seeks members The new Waldwick Rotary Club will meet weekly on Tuesdays at 8 a.m. at Matthew’s Colonial Diner, 4 Franklin Turnpike. New members are welcome to join. Rotary International Clubs are in cities and towns throughout the United States. District 7490, serving Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic counties, started meeting with those interested in forming a Waldwick chapter in January. Rotarians hold food drives for local food banks, assist the families of servicemen and women fighting abroad, build wells and schools all over the world, clean their communities, and even prepare young people for successful futures through Interact (high school), React (middle school) and Rotaract (college) programs.
