Victorian clothes displayed
Docents Sylvia Peremes and Bea Newell hold up two Victorian blouses while the mannequin is wearing a white eyelet dress. The clothing belonged to Lizzie Goetschius who came to the house as a bride in 1910.
The Hopper-Goetschius House Museum, open every Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. through August, is featuring a special exhibit of Victorian summer clothing belonging to Lizzie and Kate Goetschius. Lovely white blouses, long organdy dresses, and full skirts evoke an era made familiar to us by the Merchant Ivory period movies. On display are the many crafts made by the women who lived in the Goetschius house: embroidery and handmade lace, hat pin cushions, plaster of Paris wall hangings, quilts, and fancy pillows.
The 1739 house will be open for tours. Wander through the barn to look at the collection of tools and farm implements and visit the one-room school set up in the tenant house. The Butterfly Garden north of the barn is thriving as are the many special gardens including the fern gardens by the tenant house. The Hopper-Goetschius House Museum is on the corner of Lake Street and East Saddle River Road in Upper Saddle River. For special tours, call Bea Newell, (201) 327-6014.
Veterans of Foreign Wars District Two (Bergen County) recently held a recognition ceremony for local Gold Star and Blue Star families. The program was organized by VFW District Two Commander John J. Kelly of Mahwah Post 7124 and conducted with VFW Post 7124 members and Ramsey Post 682. New Jersey Assemblyman David Russo (District 40), and State VFW Department Commander William F. Thomson assisted with the presentations of the Gold Star and Blue Star banners. Families also received a commendation and praise certificate from the New Jersey Assembly and a “challenge coin.” Seven of the 15 families recognized have their young men and women in Iraq or Afghanistan at the present time. One family, represented by Kristi Sunden, received a double Blue Star banner because she has two young men in the military service, one of whom is currently in Afghanistan. Ramsey VFW Post 682 Commander Anthony Bailey made a presentation of the Gold Star Banner, the NJ Assembly certificate, and the challenge coin to Serena Jankiewicz, mother of Marine Corporal Michael D. Jankiewicz of Ramsey. Corporal Jankiewicz was killed earlier this year in an accident during combat operations in Afghanistan.

Assemblyman David Russo presented a NJ Assembly Citation to all the recipients. Shown above is the certificate presented to Blue Star family representative Dave Urena, father of U.S. Navy member, Michael, shown in photo at left. (Photo by Stanley Kober, D-2 Chief of Staff.)
A VFW member said the goal of the presentation was to encourage, recognize, and support the families of young men and women who are serving in the military, some in combat situations and others who may have made the ultimate sacrifice, by letting these families know they are a family with other veterans -and the veterans are a support group for them.
