CERT benefits from Chamber, Motorola donation
The Waldwick Community Emergency Response Team recently received six multi-channel radios donated by the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce in concert with Motorola. Waldwick Chamber President Christine Figliuolo explained that, following her organization’s 2010 5K Run, Chamber members decided to donate some of the race proceeds to CERT. “We asked what they needed,” Figliuolo said. Finding the team needed radios to facilitate their work in the borough, Race Director Stan Kowalski and Jack Devereaux, his contact at Motorola, decided to pool their resources to effect the donation. The Chamber donated $450 of the approximately $1,500 cost. Motorola donated the balance. Waldwick Police Sergeant Frank Paccione, who heads the borough’s CERT program, recently accepted the radios. “It’s incredible how folks have truly helped us,” Figliuolo said. “Everyone sees the good in what we’re doing and wants to be a part of it. That motivates everyone more -and now CERT can do its job more efficiently.” Commenting on the donation, Kowalski said, “For the past two years, CERT has supported our event. Frank (Paccione) and his team worked closely with our staff to ensure the safety of our participants and volunteers. Considering the inclement weather we had to deal with, we had over 240 participants cross the finish line with no reported accidents or injuries. I venture to say I can attribute that to solid planning, great support, and a little bit of luck. “Communication is extremely important when hosting an event of this nature. CERT had no communication devices. We did have Waldwick Police and the Waldwick Ambulance Corps on hand who were equipped with communication (equipment), but I felt CERT also needed the tools to perform their jobs.” CERT members are trained to respond to widespread emergencies on the local level, and provide crowd control and other assistance at large-scale community events, such as the Waldwick 5K, school programs, and the Waldwick Lions Club Carnival. Devereaux, a Waldwick resident who works for Motorola, had been loaning radios to the Waldwick 5K staff for coordination of the run since its inception. When approached about donating radios to CERT, he responded with enthusiasm, saying the donation was really about corporate citizenship. “Giving back to the communities where we work and live is a corporate responsibility,” Devereaux commented. “Motorola and one of their dealers, Altech Electronics, teamed up to provide the radios.” For more information about the Waldwick Chamber and the annual 5K, visit Waldwickchamber.com. Kowalski said Webmaster Doug Yuen’s patience and hard work have resulted in an excellent Internet presence.
