Area August 11, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 Allendale contracts study of shared police services Allendale Mayor Vince Barra said last week that a $5,000 study could possibly lead to a shared service agreement among the Allendale, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River police departments. “We’re going to get the results of the study back in about six weeks,” Barra said late last week. “This is very preliminary. It’s just to give us some ideas and options.” The Allendale Council awarded the $5,000 contract to Jersey Professional Management of Cranford to conduct a preliminary assessment of the Allendale Police Department’s organization and to provide recommendations. Earlier this year, the borough approved a resolution to explore the sharing of police services including patrol and dispatch. Officials site budget constraints as an impetus for the review. Mayor Barra stressed that the study is extremely preliminary and that no decision had been made at the present time. The concept, officials said, is not a merger of the three police departments, but rather one of shared services. Chief Robert Herndon of the Allendale Police Department, a 41-year police veteran and Vietnam combat veteran, had announced his retirement earlier this year and will be leaving the department later this month. Allendale has a completely new police headquarters, completed a few years ago with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment. J. KOSTER ‘Four Towns…’ program hosts movie Four Towns, Three Months, Two Books, One Hot Topic: Read will continue Aug. 25 with an 8 p.m. screening of the HBO movie “Temple Grandin” at the Northern Highlands Regional High School auditorium in Allendale. The film, which is sponsored by the Allendale Woman’s Club, is free. Temple Grandin, an autistic animal behaviorist, is author of “Animals in Translation,” one of the two books chosen for the summer’s hot topic: autism. The New York Times called the biopic of Grandin’s struggle with autism and ultimate successes in the field of animal behavior “funny, instructive and also intangibly charming.” Staring Claire Danes as Grandin, with Julia Ormond, Catherine O’Hara, and David Straithairn, the film chronicles Grandin’s diagnosis, her turbulent growth and development during her school years, and the enduring support she received from her mother, aunt, and science teacher. At 109 minutes long, “Temple Grandin” is appropriate for viewers who are age 10 and older. The Pittsburgh Post Gazette writes, “’Temple Grandin’ turns out to be the kind of biopic Hollywood rarely makes anymore: It’s positive, revealing and surprising; an intelligent period piece without sex or violence that’s virtually free of profanity.” The “Four Towns…”program will end with a Community Forum and Book Talk on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. at Northern Highlands Regional High School that will feature speakers on autism. The second title in the program is fiction “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” by Mark Haddon. Copies of “The Curious Incident…” and “Temple Grandin” are available at the Allendale, Ho-Ho-Kus, and Upper Saddle River libraries. But STILL can’t lose that Tummy or Cellulite?
