Ho-Ho-Kus
Eagle Scout candidate completes service project
by Jennifer Crusco Donald Maita, an Eagle Scout candidate from the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus, recently completed his service project, which began as a renovation of the area around the flagpole and cannon at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 192 property on Cliff Street. Last week, VFW Commander Stanley Kober reported that the Boy Scout had been so successful in raising funds for his project that Maita was also able to add stone pavers in the front of the building and from the side of the building near the train station parking lot to the front of the building and up to and around the flagpole. Bushes have also been planted around the gun, Kober reported. The project was carried out in two phases. The first phase included the new flagpole, while the second phase included the landscaping, the paver walk to the flag-

pole, and new ground cover. Maita approached the borough council for approval of his Eagle Scout project last fall. At that time, the Boy Scout said the project would be done in honor of the veterans. He told the council he would raise the funds for the project, which would include the creation of a planting bed with Belgian blocks, shrubs, and perennials. An Eagle Scout’s community service
project is generally the final step before a Boy Scout receives the Eagle Award, the highest honor a Boy Scout can receive. Maita’s mother, Jennifer, and the boys from her catechism class also aided in the beautification of the borough last fall. Jennifer Maita and her crew held a cleanup at the cemetery located behind the VFW building.
