McNamara to fill Fredricks’ unexpired term on board
Judy McNamara has been named to fill George Fredricks’ unexpired term on the Waldwick Library Board. Waldwick Mayor Russell “Buddy” Litchult selected McNamara, a Fairleigh Dickinson University graduate and 10-year borough resident. The new trustee is a girls’ softball coach and a volunteer at the Crescent School library. She is employed by a spa in Ramsey. Waldwick Library Director Patty Boyd recently provided McNamara with an orientation. The new trustee will begin her service to the board in September, when the group resumes its meetings after a summer hiatus. Her presence will bring the board’s membership to nine. Fredricks, who died last year at the age of 90, was the longest serving board member, logging almost 50 years as a trustee. “He was very devoted to the library in so many ways,” Boyd said. “He began as a volunteer bookkeeper/accountant for the library, and started a program called the Armchair Traveler, showing photos from around the world. He believed the library was not just a place for books, but a place for public programs. He contributed many books and materials that were being discarded by the New York Public Libraries.” In 2006, Fredricks has already spent more than half of his life making a difference as a volunteer at the Waldwick Library. Then-Mayor Rick Vander Wende proclaimed Sept. 16, 2006 “George Fredricks Day in Waldwick,” in recognition of the volunteer’s extraordinary and tireless efforts in broadening the scope of library service and promoting the image of the library within the community. “Nobody loved the Library more than George,” said Councilman Don Sciolaro, the library liaison, at a recent council meeting. Born in New York City, Fredricks learned the value of the public library system as a child. He reportedly read every book in the children’s section of his library, and received permission to start reading those in the adult section. He moved to Waldwick in 1956, the year the public library opened, and became the first library card holder. Fredricks, who worked as an accountant for the classical music radio station WQXR, volunteered to help Waldwick’s library director with some accounting work in 1961. Fredricks was able to reconcile the library checking account, which had been out of balance for many years. His efforts earned him a letter of commendation from the auditors. The following year, Mayor Guernsey appointed Fredricks to the library board. Fredricks’ work at the library included organizing photography contests, stamp-collecting workshops, music appreciation programs, and Nostalgia Corner -- an exhibit area specializing in topics of historical significance. He also developed and maintained a collection of materials about substance abuse that became a resource for libraries throughout Bergen County. As historian of the Borough of Waldwick, he shared his knowledge of local events with the library’s staff and patrons. His historical files are still considered invaluable resources, and have made Waldwick’s history accessible to all. The multipurpose room at the library, built in 1981 as the third addition to the building, was named the George F. Fredricks Room in recognition of his significant contributions to the library.
