Saddle River
Arlene Romoff of Saddle River was recently honored by the Hearing Loss Association of America for her work with the Hearing Loss Association of New Jersey, which received a national award for excellence from the national organization. “HLA-NJ epitomizes the selection criteria,” said Elizabeth LeBarron, the HLA National States and Chapters coordinator. “This award recognizes a state organization that has a strong record of spotlighting and effecting changes for people with hearing loss.” The New Jersey organization, LeBarron said, does an excellent job of informing people who lose their hearing in their middle or later years about support services and about working collaboratively with state agencies. “Hearing loss is the most complex and misunderstood of disabilities,” Romoff said. “Even a mild to moderate hearing loss can make it hard to function on the job, cause stress within friendships and marriages, and lead to serious depression and isolation. And since it is invisible, it is often thought of as ‘no big deal.’ Expert guidance is available, but it is often hard to find. HLA-NJ has helped thousands of New Jerseyans break out of the isolation and withdrawal that too often accompanies hearing loss.” Romoff began to lose her hearing in her late teens, but continued her studies and holds a degree in mathematics from City College of New York. She worked as a computer programmer in an insurance firm. She and her husband reside in Saddle River.
