Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • August 4, 2010 Allendale By raising his voice and inspiring his peers to live healthier lives, Justin DeParis, 14, of Allendale is leading the fight against childhood obesity. He is one of 25 exceptional young people selected to serve on the 2010-11 Youth Advisory Board for the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, an organization founded by the American Heart Association and the William J. Clinton Foundation. DeParis is entering his third year of service on the board. As a part of his work, DeParis has participated as a leader in the Teen Youth Forum at the Vanderbilt YMCA in New York City. He also planted a vegetable garden to grow fresh, organic vegetables for kids to sample at U.S. Gym in Mahwah. In addition, he attended a roundtable discussion about healthy kids at the White House with First Lady Michelle Obama. When asked what about the biggest obstacle youth face when trying to live a healthier life, DeParis replied, “Since I am very active, I find it hard to have time to sit down for healthy meals. It is a challenge to eat right when I am always on the go.” DeParis is a student at the Brookside School and loves to keep active by competing in gymnastics, being part of his high school marching band’s color guard, and performing in musical theater. A close family friend said, “Justin’s matter-of-fact attitude towards healthy eating has made an impression” on her four teenagers. The 2010-11 board members, who range in age from nine through 17 and represent 21 states, will continue the leadership of past boards by creating social networking campaigns around healthy living, speaking at stakeholder conferences, engaging with government leaders and initiating healthy changes through service-learning and other projects at school and in their neighborhoods. “Empowering youth to make healthy lifestyle choices is critical to combating childhood obesity,” said Ginny Ehrlich, executive director of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. “The efforts of Justin and the other Youth Advisory Board members highlight the power of youth voice— inspiring each other to ensure their generation will live longer, healthier lives.” ACKERMAN’S Music       4 Out of 5 Ain’t Bad!
