Waldwick

Waldwick recently marked the first anniversary of the solar panel installation at the borough’s administration building. Over the course of the year, the solar panels generated over 23 kilowatts of energy – four kilowatts more than anticipated -- which allowed the borough to sell 23 Solar Renewable Energy Credits at $15,239. In addition, borough officials estimate annual electrical savings from the solar installation in the amount of $3,491, bringing the total savings and proceeds from the sale of credits to $18,730. At this rate, the total costs of the solar installation will be amortized in approximately seven and half years. This period would have been further reduced if the borough had been eligible for federal tax credits. “The borough will continue to pursue cost reductions in all budgetary expenses,” Councilman Frank Palladino said. “This solar energy project, initiated before my term began last year, is exactly the thought process required for identifying efficiencies that save us money. Future cost reductions will require similar creative thinking and the likely consolidation of services.”
Solar panels save energy, cash in borough
The solar panels were the most visible of the energy saving measures the governing body has pursued over the past months in effort to cut expenses. The borough has outfitted various buildings with occupancy sensors, energy efficient lighting, and new more highly efficient HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) units. Most of these improvements were paid through grants received from Public Service offered to municipal governments,
which the borough actively pursued. These upgrades to the administration building, public safety building, and the public works garage combined with borough employees’ proactive approach to energy conservation saved the borough $17,000 in electricity costs for these three buildings as there has been a reduction of 121,000 kwh from the previous year. The Borough of Waldwick is getting even more serious about sharing services with neighboring towns in the face of increasing costs and a tighter tax cap. The borough already has in place several joint initiatives, including sharing its pistol range with seven area towns, a joint court administrator with Midland Park and a tub grinder with Ho-HoKus, among others. Mayor names consolidation committee
Authority, both headquartered in Waldwick, are also joint ventures of several area towns. Mayor Russell “Buddy’ Litchult said last week that he has appointed a consolidation committee to pursue additional options. The members are Councilman Don Sciolaro, chairman; and council members Frank Palladino and Anita Bozzo. (continued on page 14)
