In May of 2008, Ron Panicucci attended the American Cancer Society’s two-day Relay for Life of Glen Rock fundraiser as a chaperone for his daughter’s team from Immaculate Heart Academy. Over the past two years, his involvement has increased -- first to forming his own fundraising team in 2009, and now to fielding a team and serving on the event committee. “I knew little about the event before attending, and it turned out to be an extremely enjoyable and rewarding weekend,” Panicucci said. “In 2009, I organized an incredible team of dedicated family and friends, and…I had a fantastic experience. Team Panicucci will be back in action for 2010.” Panicucci, a professional engineer with LAN Associates in Midland Park and a resident of North Haledon, knows that hundreds of thousands of people will hear the words “You have cancer,” this year. “Unfortunately, we all know too many friends and relatives who are suffering from -- or have succumbed to -- cancer. That’s why I have chosen to fight back against cancer by actively participating in the relay.” The relay began in 1985, with a man who had lost his wife to cancer. Since that time, the relay has grown to include over 5,000 communities. This is the eighth year Glen Rock has been involved in relay activities. This year’s relay will take place at Glen Rock High School, 400 Hamilton Avenue, Glen Rock, from Saturday, May 15 through Sunday, May 16. Panicucci said his personal goal is to complete 25 miles. He has set a personal fundraising goal of $2,500 and a team goal of $5,000. The relay, which is considered a celebration of life, brings the community together in a unified effort to fight cancer and symbolizes the fight that cancer patients must face after they are diagnosed with cancer. The light and the

darkness of the day and night parallel the physical effects, emotions, and mental state of a cancer patient while he or she is undergoing treatment. Relay for Life is an overnight event at which individuals and teams camp out, dance, and take turns walking or running around a track “relay” style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants light hundreds of luminaria around the track to honor cancer survivors and to remember those lost to the disease. The timing of each event is symbolic, and links the relay participants’ to those of cancer patients. The relay begins as the sun is starting to set. This coming darkness symbolizes the time a person is diagnosed with cancer. As night settles in, it gets colder and darker, just as the emotions of the cancer patient do. The period between 1 and 2 a.m. represents the time when treatments begin. People become exhausted or sick, and may think about giving up. The rising sun represents the end of treatment for the cancer patient. He or she can see the light at the end of the tunnel and knows that life will go on. The morning light brings on a new day full of life and excitement for new beginnings. The American Cancer Society Relay for Life gives people across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. In addition to helping people celebrate, remember, and fight back, Relay for Life also helps raise much-needed funds and awareness to help the American Cancer Society save lives. Panicucci noted that everyone has a personal reason to care about the fight against cancer. “Whatever your reasons, I hope you’ll choose to make a difference by making a donation online to support my efforts. I’m so grateful to have people like you in my life who want to see an end to cancer in our lifetime. Together we can save lives. To

PSE&G reminds customers, contractors, and excavators that they must call before digging to avoid hitting underground gas and electric lines. To make it easy to call, 811 has been designated as the national dialing code to have underground lines located and marked. Here is important information to consider: Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on individual properties. You can easily damage them if you don’t know where they are. Digging into these lines can disrupt vital utility services and result in costly delays, expensive repairs and environmental or property damage. Worse, you can seriously injure yourself or others. Whether planning a major home improvement project or installing something as simple as a fence or mailbox post, a call must be placed beforehand to know where it is safe to dig. Call 811 or 1-800-272-1000 at least four business days before each job to have underground pipes, wires, and equipment located. Utility workers will respond and place markers where utility lines are buried, free of charge. Be sure to wait three full business days after calling before doing any digging. Do not dig until lines have been marked. Respect the marks. Always hand dig within two feet of marked lines. Not only is it a good idea to call before you dig, it’s the law.
