Voters approve school budgets, endorse candidates
Last week, registered voters approved the local school budgets and endorsed their representatives to the school boards. A summary of the results follows. Allendale Voters in the Allendale Board of Education election approved two uncontested incumbents for second terms and approved the school budget by a margin of about three to two, with 954 voters approving the spending plan and 624 voters opposed. The public had been asked to approve a budget with a tax levy of $13,281,213 and a debt service item of $518,968. Allendale Board of Education incumbents Melissa Duncan, a stay-at-home mother who formerly worked in the insurance industry, received 960 votes and John Geraghty, a health consultant, received 932. Duncan and Geraghty have both served one previous term. Ho-Ho-Kus Ho-Ho-Kus voters approved the $11,165,103 tax levy associated with the $11,994,685 2010-11 school budget, casting 745 ballots in favor of the spending plan and 565 against the budget. Incumbent school board candidates Colleen Federer and John Buffa, who ran unopposed, received 898 votes and 866 votes, respectively. Federer won a new three-year term, while Buffa was elected to a one-year unexpired term. Northern Highlands Regional High School Voters in Allendale and Upper Saddle River have approved the Northern Highlands Regional High School’s proposed 2010-11 budget of $25,347,167 by casting their ballots in favor of the $18,610,435 tax levy. The owner of an Upper Saddle River home assessed at the borough average of $748,586 will experience an increase of approximately $178, and the owner of an Allendale home assessed at that municipality’s average of $537,900 will experience an increase of about $38. Voters also chose three trustees who will represent Upper Saddle River on the Northern Highlands Board of Education. Incumbent Robert Hands received 1,189 ballots, Robert Wei received 889, and Ann Pagano received 807 in their successful campaigns for seats on the board. Incumbents Cheryl Kashishian and Dale Roberts received 755 ballots and 689 ballots, respectively. There were no Allendale seats available in this year’s election. Saddle River Saddle River residents approved the tax levy associated with the 2010-11 school budget by a vote of 195 to 133. The budget, which totals $8,039,549, includes a tax levy of $7,005,831. The tax rate associated with the budget, including the repayment of debt and adjustments, has been estimated at 0.3140 per $100 of assessed value. There was no contest in the Saddle River Board of Education election this year. Incumbents Irene Feldsott was reelected with 218 votes, and Henry Senger earned a new seat with 216 ballots. Upper Saddle River Upper Saddle River voters approved the $19,378,221 tax levy associated with the proposed budget of $20,254,515 by a margin of 1,174 to 819. The budget will result in a tax increase of $204 for the owner of a home assessed at the borough’s average of $750,000. Voters also endorsed school board candidates Dr. Jill Stoller with 1,244 ballots and Dante Ferrarie with 1,199 ballots. Both candidates are incumbents and ran unopposed. Waldwick The Waldwick Board of Education’s $26,705,040 budget has been approved at the polls, with 1,095 voters casting ballots in favor of the $24,134,786 tax levy and 1,040 ballots against the spending plan. The associated tax increase is approximately $312 for the owner of a home valued at $416,000, the borough’s average assessment. Daniel Marro Sr., Dawn Monaco, and Dominick Novelli, Waldwick’s three incumbent school board members, ran unopposed. Marro earned 1,319 votes, Monaco received 1,231, and Novelli received 1,228.

The Women’s Guild of Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church invites the public to “Brahms, Broadway, and Beyond,” a program of German art songs, Broadway show-stoppers, arias, and sacred songs. The concert will be held in the church’s barrier-free Education Building at 660 East Glen Avenue at 1:15 p.m. on May 5. Performers will include Casey Molino Dunn, baritone and music director at the Rutherford Congregational Church.
