Cage, who has become Hollywood’s resident expert at playing eccentrics and zanies, etches another offbeat performance as a dad whose birthday gift for his little girl is a switchblade. When he is in his dark, caped costume, Cage channels Adam West as he spouts his dialogue with frequent mid-sentence pauses, odd word emphases, and distinctive bodily punctuation. Johnson is perfect for the role of Dave. He is immediately believable as a likable, average kid, just trying to get through another day at school and fantasizing about himself as a superhero. He is self-effacing rather than cocky about his foray into crime fighting, so the audience roots for him. Viewers want him to succeed, but fear for his obvious vulnerability to real danger. That is something that director Vaughn does not shy from. With actual superheroes, consequences are very rarely depicted. Heroes appear impervious to harm, but not Dave. Director Vaughn has devoted considerable attention to action sequences and, though well staged, they are not the central appeal of the film. They often go beyond what is necessary to satisfy plot points and take on a cinematic stylishness harking back to the “Kill Bill” films. What draws viewers in is the unlikely tale of regular folks transforming from bystanders to activists who have a significant effect on crime and those who profit from it. “Kick-Ass” is an original. Its mixture of violence, romance, and comedy does not always work, but for the most part, the movie is a refreshing dusting-off and rethinking of a genre that has become overly familiar and often takes itself too seriously.

Superheroes
(continued from Entertainment page) Damon Macready (Nicolas Cage) and his 11-year-old daughter Mindy (Chloe Grace Moretz), who are planning their own vendetta against crime boss Frank D’Amico (Mark Strong). Like Dave, Damon and Mindy can’t fly, morph into other identities, race with lightning speed, or read minds. Instead, costumed as Big Daddy and Hit Girl, they have an arsenal of weaponry and the technical know-how to wreak a pretty good helping of havoc. Christopher Mintz-Plasse (McLovin in “Superbad”) plays Red Mist, yet another superhero wannabe who turns up about halfway through the film with an agenda all his own. Director Matthew Vaughn based “Kick-Ass” on the comic stories of Mark Millar. The film follows the path of traditional superhero cinema only to a point, veering into a wild, anarchistic tale of vigilantism mixed with a budding love story. The violence is pretty strong stuff, and even Moretz is not spared her share of pummeling. What makes the film click is the combination of energy, over-the-top action sequences, and the performances. Much has been written about Moretz who, considering her age, is impressive and shoulders a good chunk of the movie. It is unsettling to see one so young spout profanity and dispatch bad guys with the skill of a ninja warrior, but that is part of the odd tone
