Beatles cover band to perform Zion Lutheran Church, located at 96 East Allendale Road in Saddle River, will present the Mystical Majesty Band on Sunday, June 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. The doors to Fellowship Hall will be open for outdoor seating. Attendees can bring lawn chairs. Admission to the concert is free. Giliano to discuss cookbook The Upper Saddle River Library’s “Meet the Chefs” series will continue May 17 at 6 p.m. with Mireille Guiliano, author of the cookbook entitled “French Women Don’t Get Fat.” Guiliano’s first cookbook vividly illustrates the principles that guide her eating and allow her to enjoy food and maintain balance and a healthy, consistent weight. For years, her fans have asked her for more of the meals and recipes she touched upon in her two “French Women Don’t Get Fat” books, and she is now offering more than 150 recipes that are easy, quick, and delicious. Sponsors sought for PBA Cigar Dinner The Venetian of Garfield and Seasons of Washington Township will sponsor a Cigar Dinner Extravaganza on May 24 from 6:30 to 11 p.m. at the Venetian in Garfield to benefit several Policemen’s Benevolent Associations. Beneficiaries include Mahwah Local 143, Garfield Local 46, Paramus Local 186, Saddle River Local 348, and Pascack Valley Local 206. Donations and contributions are being sought for this event. Art exhibit and reception planned An exhibit of Upper Saddle River artists’ work will be held during the month of May at the borough’s library, 245 Lake Street. The public is invited to meet the artists at the opening reception on Saturday, May 1 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Learn to grow herbs Jacobsen Landscape Design will present a program on growing herbs for healthy living at the Upper Saddle River Library, 245 Lake Street, on Wednesday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m. Learn how to select herbs, the types of soil to use, water needs, light requirements,

Deer resistant plants offered The Annual Heritage Plant Sale at the Hopper-Goetschius House Museum in Upper Saddle River will be held on Saturday, May 1 from 10:30 a.m. until plants are gone. This year’s sale will feature a large selection of deer and groundhog resistant plants. In addition to Mother’s Day plants, there will be annuals, ferns, grasses, herbs, heritage plants from the museum’s gardens, and perennials donated by local gardeners. Derek Michalski from the USR Environmental Committee will also be on hand to talk on composting. At 11:30 a.m., Arnie Friedman from the USR Shade Tree Commission will discuss tree and shrub pruning and answer questions. Members of the Museum Garden Committee will be on hand to share advice. Refreshments will be served. The Hopper-Goetschius House Museum is located on the northwest corner of Lake Street and East Saddle River Road. All proceeds go to the upkeep of the museum gardens. Garden Club offers scholarship The Saddle River Garden Club is offering a $1,000 academic scholarship to a student who is planning to study environmental sciences, conservation, architectural design, horticulture, or botany and resides in Bergen County. Fishing Derby set The Upper Saddle Recreation Commission has scheduled its Annual Fishing Derby for Saturday, May 1 at Liberty Park from 9 a.m. to noon. Bucky Rehain will be hand to offer assistance to children and provide answers to many questions about various fish and wildlife issues. All Upper Saddle River residents, ages five and over, are invited to bring their fishing poles and bait and enjoy a great time. Awards will be presented. Lions announce car fundraiser The Saddle River Valley Lions Club’s annual car fundraiser is underway. This year’s prize is a “Red Candy” 2010 Ford Mustang Premium Sports Package V6 Coupe. Tickets are $10 and are available from any SRV Lions Club Member or at the Lions’ annual carnival, which will be held May 31 and through June 5. The carnival and car fundraiser are the club’s two major fundraising events of the year. Wristband Nights, featuring one price for all rides all night, will be held on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The winner of the car will be announced at 10 p.m. on Saturday night. The carnival opens at 4 p.m. Net proceeds from the car fundraiser and carnival benefit Saddle River Valley Lions Charities, Inc. Over the last 52 years, this organization has donated over $1,759,000 to the blind and visually impaired, other health-related charities, local volunteer organizations, student scholarships and youth recreation activities.
