We offer a special thanks to Gayle and Al for their recent “Party with a Purpose.” They had their guests bring a contribution to a Caribbean Night theme party they had organized. The decorations included an artificial palm tree, and the menu featured tropical drinks and food. Guests wore shorts and sandals, and listened to steel band music. While they were having a good time socializing, they raised over $1,500 for Emmanuel Cancer Foundation! The hosts said it was easy to do, and their guests were happy to support a local charity. Please consider hosting your own “Party with a Purpose.” It will make a difference to you and to our work. Marjorie was perplexed 4-29-09 karen/janine when her six-year old daughter, Julianna, complained of nausea and dizziness. Julianna’s EmmanuelHelp2x.75(4-29-09) symptoms, which included a poor appetite, prompted a visit .75 doctor. Several trips to the pediatrician left them 3 x to the baffled, until some tests came back and they learned that Julianna had leukemia. Marjorie told us that was the worst day of her life and that she just cried and cried. Marjorie is a single mom who had been getting by with the help of her parents and friends. The diagnosis was emotionally crushing, and she needed help with so many things: getting her life reorganized to deal with many trips to the oncologist and to treatments, working things out with Julianna’s school, dealing with health insurance problems, and emotionally managing the crisis that had suddenly been thrust upon her. An ECF caseworker quickly stepped in to help Marjorie. In almost no time at all, she was able to deal more effectively with (continued on page 23) Waldwick Support sought as Waldwick Run nears All systems are go for the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce’s Third Annual 5K Run/1 Mile Walk this Sunday, April 25 (rain or shine), with Chamber President Christine Figliuolo urging residents to treat the event with the same spirit they exhibit for a parade, including lining the Run’s route cheering on the runners and turning out at the high school field to partake of the morning’s festivities. “This is a major undertaking, and we couldn’t do it without the support from all areas – the mayor and council, the business community, and all volunteers working together,” commented Chamber of Commerce President Christine Figliuolo. “Everyone is very excited about the event, which puts the focus on our wonderful town. It is going to be great,” Figliuolo said. “The enthusiasm from the sponsors this year has been amazing,” she added. “Silver Sponsor Home Hardware called to see what else they could do to help us out. Unsolicited, this business wants to do more. Can you believe it?” she commented. Pre-registration will take place on Saturday, April 24 during the pasta dinner at the Waldwick Ambulance Corps building from 4 to 7 p.m. Registration on race day will be from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. at the Waldwick High School lower turf field (Wyckoff and Hopper avenues), with opening ceremonies at 8:30 a.m. Soloist Patricia Wilson will sing the National Anthem. The Run gets underway at 9 a.m. from the intersection of West Prospect Street and Hopper Avenue, followed at 9:30 a.m. by the Walk. The course has been officially certified and sanctioned as a USATF Grand Prix event. It will take runners east on West Prospect to Wanamaker, right on Conklin for two blocks, left on Maple and back to West Prospect. It continues west on West Prospect to Smith Street, to Bohnert Place, right on Hopper, left on Alexander, left on Irving Place, right on Pennington, right on Pine to the turnaround before the Branagh Little League Field, where a water station will be set up. The route continues south, then right on to the path entrance by the playground, past the gazebo and along White’s Pond to Hopper, right onto Hopper, past the Waldwick Pool to West Prospect, right on Lakeview Drive past Veterans Park to Lindbergh Parkway to Brady Street, then left on Brady and left on West Prospect to the Waldwick High School field gate entrance and the finish line. Medals will be awarded in eight categories, from 13 and under to 70+. Door and raffle prizes and goody bags will be given to participants. All pre-registrants will receive a race day t-shirt. The event, to run until 12 noon, is being sponsored by more than 40 local businesses. Many are offering prizes, providing food and drinks and services. There will be entertainment and activities for children, and the Boosters The names of the Waldwick residents who clock the fastest times in the Waldwick Chamber of Commerce’s 5K run each year will be memorialized in a plaque to be on permanent display at town hall. Donations of canned food will be accepted for the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation. Entry fees are $25 per person, $20 for the Fun Walk.
