Challenge emerges in borough’s Republican primary
by Jennifer Crusco Three Republican candidates have filed for this June’s GOP primary in the Borough of Ho-Ho-Kus. Incumbent Republican Councilman Lee B. Flemming has filed for reelection to one of the two available seats on the council, but has asked Robert Yudin, chairman of the Bergen County Republican Organization, to allow him to run “off the line” due to what Flemming calls his “significant disagreement with the council.” The officially endorsed Republican ticket includes Kevin Shea and Philip Rorty. Incumbent Republican Councilman Gordon Hamm previously announced that he would not seek reelection this year, and no Democrats filed petitions for their party’s June 8 primary election. Flemming is originally from Rochester, New York. He earned an MBA from the University of Buffalo and holds a teaching degree from the State University College at Buffalo. He spent 17 years in sales, marketing, and finance with Benjamin Moore, and later served as vice president of marketing for Muralo. He later became a full-time agent and development specialist with Abbott & Caserta, a local real estate concern. He is also involved in business development for HILTI North America, a Lichtensteinbased company that is a major manufacturer of construction tools and supplies. The councilman has served as a coach for local soccer, basketball, and baseball teams, and was a coach for a local travel basketball team. When he filed for reelection last week, Flemming said he considers himself the “conservative Republican alternative” to the other council hopefuls, due to his “lack of full philosophical alignment with the other council members.” Rorty is chairman of the Ho-Ho-Kus Republican County Committee, the organization responsible for recommending appointees to the council when members of the governing body step down, leaving unexpired terms. He is currently president of the Ho-Ho-Kus Volunteer Fire Department, and a member of the borough planning board. He has resided in the borough for all but seven years of his life. He was educated at the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School and subsequently graduated from Ridgewood High School and from Nichols College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Rorty is currently a vice president with Liberty International Underwriters. He has coached soccer and baseball, played in the local softball league, and served as an Assistant Cub Master. He and his wife, Nancy, have two children, James and Emily. Shea attended Cavallini School in Upper Saddle River and graduated from Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale. He double majored in English and economics at Fairfield University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. He has spent his entire career in trading and sales at Goldman Sachs. He and his wife, Dawn, also an active member of the community, have resided in town for six years. They previously lived in London, England
with their three daughters. Their girls currently attend the local public school. Shea has been a member of the HoHo-Kus Zoning Board of Adjustment for the past two years. He is a member of the board of the Dolan School of Business, and is active at Saint Gabriel’s Church. He said he believes people must be willing to get involved to foster improvements. In recent years, Shea and his wife purchased and completely renovated the historic building known by many names, but best known as the Gingrich House. The property had languished for many years, and is now being rented to a family.

EARTH CITIZEN WALK
Every Day...
• More than 3,000 children die of hunger and easily preventable diseases. • 50,000 die due to poverty-related causes. That amounts to 18 million people per year. • Some 425 million children do not have access to safe water sources. • More than 1.3 billion people live on less than $1. • Our planet is warming at a faster rate than at any time in the last 10,000 years. • We all must have a sense of ownership and guardianship over our precious planet. • We can break the cycle that dooms children to malnutrition, lack of health care, and illiteracy. The survival of the world’s children begins with us. • We invite you to join a cause that’s larger than yourself... The Earth Citizen Movement is a global, grassroots campaign, which has set out to create a Healthier, Happier, and more Peaceful World.
