On June 8, registered voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots in the Republican and Democratic primary elections. Members of both major political parties were required to file their nominating petitions by last week’s deadline. Independent candidates will not appear on the primary ballot; they have until the date of the primary to announce their candidacy in the November general election.

Allendale
Susan LaMonica and Ari Bernstein are seeking reelection to their seats on the borough council. Barra is a retired maritime attorney, Bernstein is a practicing attorney, and LaMonica is a retired human resources director. No Democrats have filed for election this year. In recent years, the Allendale Council, under Barra’s leadership and with the cooperation of Bernstein, LaMonica, and their peers, were able to put together a plan that deflected an application for a large townhouse complex at Orchard Commons. Instead, the 3.4-acre tract is now being developed into a passive park with a small affordable housing element, which won the approval of the Council on Affordable Housing. The team also consolidated Allendale’s administration by deleting the title of borough administrator and divided the responsibilities between the administrative official and the head of the road department. The council actively seeks other ways to cut expenses.
There will be no contest in the Republican primary in Allendale this year. Vince Barra, an incumbent Republican, is seeking reelection as mayor, and fellow GOP members
opted not to seek reelection this year. Dr. Boardman, a 12-year borough resident, grew up in Manalapan, and attended Trenton State for three years before transferring to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He is part of a dental practice based in Ridgewood. Boardman is a member of the local board of health and of the Saddle River Planning Board. He is a member of the Valley Club, a local social group. He said he is committed to making the borough a better place, and will work to enhance fiscal accountability and ethics. Mastriano is now completing her first term on the borough’s governing body.
Two three-year seats are available on the Saddle River Borough Council this year, and Republican incumbent Karen Mastriano and newcomer Dr. Warren Boardman have filed. The two will run unopposed in the primary, and no Democrats have filed. Incumbent Saddle River Councilman Maurice Burke

Republican candidates Jonathan Ditkoff and Dr. Thomas Hafner have filed for this year’s primary. The two GOP newcomers will run unopposed for their party’s nomination. Council incumbents Deborah Viola and Dennis Schubert opted not to seek reelection this year. No Democrats filed by last week’s deadline. Dr. Hafner has been a general dentist for 20 years and has lived in Upper Saddle River for the past 42 years. He attended the Upper Saddle River elementary school system before moving on to Don Bosco High School. He later received a bachelor’s degree in biology from Fairleigh (continued on page 12)
