Page 8 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • April 14, 2010 Business In 1985, the section of Franklin Turnpike that passes through the Borough of Ramsey was home to a small green building that housed the original HoHoKus Secretarial School. It had a humble facade, but this was the starting point for what is now one of the most successful educational organizations in the nation: Eastwick Education, which owns and operates Eastwick College and the HoHoKus Schools in New Jersey. The school, which is celebrating its 25th Anniversary under the Eastwick Education umbrella this year, had a student population of about 32, two courses of study, and a staff of six when it first started. Since its inception, the HoHoKus Secretarial School has earned the prestigious title of Eastwick College, the student populace has bloomed to over 900, and the course offerings have expanded to encompass a diverse range of programs, including associate degrees in registered nursing, surgical technology, and cardiovascular sonography. Following the first HoHoKus School came HoHoKus RETS-Nutley, HoHoKus Hackensack, HoHoKus Trades-Paterson and the HoHoKus School at Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus. With each new school came a similar pattern of extraordinary success, with a current student population of 2,700 across all campuses. This tremendous growth didn’t happen by chance. To delve deeper into the story of Eastwick Education is to find a history of innovative education at every step. Eastwick Education was the first New Jersey-owned proprietary corporation to be recognized by the NJ Commission on Higher Education, allowing its schools to offer degrees. This was the first proprietary school approved by the NJ Board of Nursing to teach nursing; the first and longest continuously- Eastwick Education has come a long way in 25 years Thomas M. Eastwick running electronics school in the state; the first proprietary school approved to offer electrical and plumbing apprenticeship programs approved by the Department of Labor -- and the list goes on. At every step, Eastwick Education has pushed into new territories of the education industry, earning success and recognition for itself and its students. The man who leads this innovative approach and lends his namesake to the organization is Thomas M. Eastwick. Upon meeting President Eastwick, it is apparent why his schools are so successful. With a personality that is both light-hearted and direct, he has a clear sense of what he wants his schools to achieve and how they can do it. His experience includes a total of 37 years in educational positions including the dean of Heald Engineering College in San Francisco and regional director for National Education Corporation. He has overseen 16 schools and colleges on the East Coast. “I was lucky enough to have experience in both the nonprofit and profit-making educational sectors early in my career,” explained Eastwick. “It allowed me to understand the true value of a quality education and how to manage it successfully. Challenging and overcoming the administrative codes and educational formalities that deny proprietary education certain recognitions has been my driving force.” Even with 25 years of success under his belt, Eastwick has not forgotten his humble roots. Philanthropy is an important element of Eastwick Education, with regular donations to various local organizations. President Barack Obama recently recognized Eastwick Education in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. In addition, Eastwick sits on the foundation boards of both Palisades Medical Center and Bergen Regional Medical Center. He is also a founding board member of Bergen County Workforce Investment Board, a board member of Essex County Workforce Investment Board, and holds the title of governor of the Private Career School Association. After more than two decades, Eastwick College and the HoHoKus Schools show no sign of slowing down. Just this year, the college earned approval from the NJ Board of Nursing to offer a registered nursing associate degree program, the first proprietary college in the state to earn this prestigious approval. In addition, Eastwick has recently confirmed a new affiliation with Cedar Crest Adult Living Center in Pompton Plains for an additional nursing training center, and new programs are on the horizon at many of the campuses. If history is any indicator, Eastwick College and the HoHoKus Schools are likely to become increasingly successful in the coming years, setting new milestones along the way.
