On April 20, registered voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots on the tax levies associated with the proposed school budgets and may select their representatives to these local boards. This year, New Jersey’s school districts face large losses in state aid. Those losses have led some districts to cut or eliminate staff positions, programs, and other projects. Summaries of the choices follow: Voters in the Borough of Allendale will be asked to approve a budget with a current expense amount of $13,281,213 and a debt service item of $518,968. The tax increase associated with the budget would be $89 for the owner of a house assessed at $540,717. The district was able to avoid any teacher layoffs this

year through money saved in the area of special education. The savings was effected because five special education students will be leaving the K-8 district and moving on to Northern Highlands High School or leaving the district for another town. Voters will also be asked to endorse the two school board candidates, who are running unopposed. Allendale Board of Education incumbents Melissa Duncan, a stay-athome mother who formerly worked in the insurance industry, and John Geraghty, a health consultant, are running uncontested for the two available seats on the board. Both have served one previous term. Buffa, Federer seek two seats on school board

Ho-Ho-Kus residents will be asked to cast their ballots on the $11,165,103 tax levy associated with the $11,994,685 tentative 2010-11 school budget. The spending plan would result in a tax increase of $300 on a home assessed at $906,178, the borough’s average. Among the cuts in the spending plan is a reduction in force of five non-tenured

teachers. A sum of $761,376 will be raised by taxation to cover the borough’s debt service, which resulted from two bond issues. Voters will also be asked to endorse incumbent school board candidates Colleen Federer and John Buffa, who are running unopposed this year. Last fall, Buffa was named to former board president Peter Terenzio’s unexpired term. Buffa is a 13-year borough resident who was raised in the Long Island community of Merrick. He and his wife, Gina, who was raised in Ho-HoKus, have three daughters in the public school. He is a graduate of Saint Lawrence University in Canton, New York, where he received a bachelor’s degree in environmental economics. He is a first vice president at a New York-based investment bank. Federer, who is now completing her first term on the board, has resided in Ho-Ho-Kus since 1996. She has served on the board of the Contemporary Club of Ho-HoKus, as a Girl Scout Leader in Ho-Ho-Kus, and as an art docent at the Ho-Ho-Kus Public School. She and her family (continued on page 10)
