Waldwick April 14, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 3 The Waldwick Council is considering charging new fees in a number of areas as a means of offsetting increases in property taxes. “They haven’t been changed in several years. It’s in the town’s best interest to get as much as we can from the fees, because then it’s less that we have to raise in tax revenues,” Borough Administrator Gary Kratz said in recommending revising the fee ordinance. “The state has capped us at 4 percent in what we can raise in taxes, and they cut our energy tax receipts by 20 percent, which is about $450,000, so we have to look at the revenue side, and user fees is a good place to start,” said Kratz. “If you don’t use the services, then you don’t pay,” he added. The revised fee ordinance, which incorporates higher fees in nearly all areas, is being introduced by the borough council this week. A new component is a reinspection fee for homeowners who need a certificate of compliance. He said that often smoke detectors are not operational or missing and the inspector has to return, a cost that up to now is borne by the municipality. Kratz also made several suggestions for other new (continued on page 23) New user fees recommended Waldwick’s Public Health Nurse Carol Shepard was recognized last week by the Bergen County Department of Health Services for her commitment and that of other Carol Shepard honored for service municipal volunteers throughout the county in promoting public health. “Your long collaboration with Bergen County’s Office of Public Health Nursing directly and then indirectly through numerous regional child health conferences, nursing in-services and participation as a vaccinator for the 2009 H1N1 clinics, made this an easy choice,” said Margaret K. Macali, the director of the county Office of Public Health Nursing. Shepard herself volunteered at two H1N1 clinics during the swine flu emergency. Shepard accepted the award “not only on behalf of other volunteers but also for the Waldwick volunteers who build the fabric of the Waldwick community,” Shepard said.
