In Upper Saddle River, registered voters will be asked to approve the $19,378,221 tax levy associated with the proposed budget of $20,254,515. The budget would result in a tax increase of $204 for the owner of a home assessed at the borough’s average of $750,000. This year, the board received no state aid; a sum of $838,908 had been anticipated. A district official noted that some retirements helped the board members as they formulated the new spending plan. Voters will also be asked to endorse school board candidates Dr. Jill Stoller and Dante Ferrarie. Both candidates are incumbents and are running without opposition this year. Ferrarie is a lifelong resident of Bergen County and has lived in Upper Saddle River for 16 years. He has a son at Northern Highlands, a son at Cavallini Middle School, and a daughter at Bogert Elementary School. He has coached his children in a variety of sports throughout the years. Ferrarie is managing director and head of equity trading at Soleil Securities. He is also chairman of Green Apple Cleaners. He has been a trustee since 2007, and is currently chairman of the Finance Committee. He also serves on the Buildings & Grounds and Negotiations committees. As a trustee, he wishes to provide a learning and enrichment experience that exposes students to an environment that challenges them as individuals. He is also focused on creating strategic solutions to work through the state’s economic crises and still enable the district’s schools to provide a superior learning experience. (continued on page 22) (continued from page 10) Upper Saddle River home assessed at the borough average of $748,586 would experience an increase of approximately $178, and the owner of an Allendale home assessed at that municipality’s average of $537,900 would experience an increase of about $38. In dealing with the district’s loss of over $220,000 in state aid, the board cut staff development costs by 50 percent, and technology costs by 20 percent. Co-curricular activities have been reduced, and facility maintenance has been cut. Personnel cuts include the elimination of seven full time faculty positions, a supervisor, a security guard, a secretary, and the custodial staff. This year, three Upper Saddle River seats are available on the Northern Highlands Board of Education. The candidates include incumbents Robert Hands, Cheryl Kashishian, and Dale Roberts, and newcomers Ann Pagano, an attorney and former English teacher; and Robert Wei, a retired finance professional and former member of the Upper Saddle River K-8 Board of Education. There are no Allendale seats available in this year’s election. There is no contest in the Saddle River Board of Education election this year. Incumbents Irene Feldsott and Henry Senger have filed for election to the two available seats on the board. Voters will be asked to cast their ballots on the proposed 2010-11 school budget of $8,039,549, which includes a tax levy of $7,005,831.
