Walk to Save Lives set; prizes needed
The Red Cross Club at Northern Highlands Regional High School will host its second annual Walk to Save Lives, an event to help prevent the spread malaria in African nations, on May 22. Proceeds from the walkathon will benefit Nothing but Nets, a national campaign sponsored by various organizations, including the United Nations foundation, the People of the United Methodist Church, and Sports Illustrated. For every $10 the campaign receives, one malaria bed net is sent to Africa, where it potentially saves one life. The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at the Northern Highlands turf field stadium and track at 298 Hillside Avenue, Allendale. Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., and is $10 for adults; $5 for seniors and children under 12. This year, in addition to the walkathon, there will be a barbeque, a concert featuring local bands, and prizes. Malaria, the leading killer of children in Africa, claims a child every 30 seconds. This disease infects over 500 million people a year, and kills over one million. Thus far, Nothing but Nets has sent over 3,000,000 malaria nets to countries in need through individual and large scale efforts. Those who wish to pre-register must do so no later than Friday, May 14. Those who register by the deadline will receive a $2 discount and a complimentary silicone bracelet. To receive a registration form, send an e-mail to walktosavelives@yahoo.com. Additional information is available at northernhighlands.org. Local businesses that wish to donate items to be used as prizes should contact Michele Corriston or Tom Dalo of the Northern Highlands Red Cross Club at walktosavelives@yahoo.com.
