Waldwick April 7, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES III • Page 5 Volunteers sought as library’s fundraising begins Waldwick Library Director Patty Boyd has put out a call for volunteers who are willing to assist with special event fundraisers to support the goal of expanding the library’s meeting room. Boyd reported that she and the members of the Friends of the Waldwick Library are currently exploring fundraising options, and welcome the volunteer participation of the community. Although the Waldwick Library Board of Trustees decided to place its expansion on hold for 2010, library officials agreed it would be best to proceed with the fundraising plans. The donor recognition display – a wooden frame with space for custom-engraved decorative tiles in graduated sizes -- was installed in the library’s foyer on March 15. Boyd reports that people are already sending orders for engraved tiles. “I’m happy to say it looks quite beautiful,” Boyd said last week. “It looks similar to the board used in 2002-03, but it is much larger. It’s monumental in design.” The director explained that the board is 87 inches wide by 68 inches high. Donors have three options: Bronze-level donors are invited to contribute $250 to $999 for one of 350 available custom-engraved 5” x 1.25” tiles; Silver-level donors may contribute $1,000 to $4,999 for one of 56 available 5” x 2.5” tiles; and Gold-level donors may contribute $5,000 or more for one of 26 5” x 5” tiles. Boyd explained that there had been space for 28 5” x 5” tiles, but two of those spaces have already been dedicated in honor of the former library director, J. David Kamykoski, whose $100,000 estate gift to the library has been earmarked for the meeting room expansion project. A dedication ceremony is being eyed for later this spring, Boyd said. At that time, the library will also recognize Kamykoski, who was the library’s director for 25 years before his retirement in 2001. Although the no construction will take place this year, the Waldwick Library Board is expected to revisit the expansion proposal this fall. Current estimates place the cost of the expansion at approximately $400,000. The library already has over half of that amount in its capital account. A large portion of that funding consists of the estate gift from Kamykoski. The library also has approximately $118,000, much of which has been gained through the passport program. That program, which was initiated in 2004, took off in 2007, when travelers to the Caribbean were required to carry a passport. Since that time, the library has been inundated with requests. The library hosts a wide variety of programs for children and adults, but Boyd is often forced to turn people away due to the limited capacity of the building’s 625 square foot meeting room. Library officials asked Anthony Iovino, the Little Ferrybased architect who specializes in library architecture, to design an addition that would double the size of the current meeting space. Iovino also handled the library’s major renovation, which was completed in 2003. (continued on page 19) REE !
