Ridgewood September 29, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 9 The Valley Hospital Sports Institute will host a free symposium for the coaches and parents of young athletes on Thursday, Oct. 28 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Valley Hospital auditorium. “Keep Young Athletes Safe: Know the Risks and Know the Facts” will include a panel of medical experts. An emergency medicine physician, an emergency nurse/paramedic, a neurologist, a pediatric cardiologist, and an orthopedic surgeon will address the more dangerous health risks to young athletes that can be associated Institute hosts free symposium on young athletes with serious injury and even sudden death. Topics will include: heat illness prevention and pre-hospital care; concussions and second impact syndrome; and cardiac screening and hidden heart conditions. Heat illness, including heat stroke, is 100 percent preventable, yet it accounts for several sports related deaths each year across the country. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are not just a concern during the summer; whenever an individual exercises, his or her core body temperature rises. Risks increase with high humidity and a lack of fluid replacement. A concussion is a brain injury that often does not result in any loss of consciousness. Second impact syndrome occurs as a result of an athlete returning to contact activities before the brain has time to sufficiently heal. It is critical that coaches and parents become aware of the signs and symptoms of concussion, and that immediate care be taken to protect the brain from further injury. Research clearly shows the brain of a young athlete responds differently to injury and requires a more conservative management plan compared to the brain of an adult. Sudden death from an inherited congenital heart defect is one of the most feared risks of sport, but also one of the least common occurrences. Knowing the risk factors, being aware of the signs and symptoms, and providing appropriate screening when suspected are the best ways to prevent a catastrophic event on the playing field. Coaches, officials, parents, and anyone involved in youth sports and working with young athletes are urged to attend this symposium and gain the knowledge that could save a life. Presentations will be followed by a panel discussion. The hospital is located at 223 North Van Dien Avenue, Ridgewood. To register, call 1-800-VALLEY 1 (1-800825-5391).
