Glen Rock September 29, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 7 Learn how to improve the health of your garden at a composting workshop at the Glen Rock Arboretum. Residents are invited to learn how to compost at a free demonstration at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 17 at the arboretum lawn that faces Doremus Avenue. Presenter Daphne Boss-Ayalon will demonstrate how to construct one type of compost bin, and will explain various composting methods. She will exhibit samples of compost and explain the composting being done by the volunteers at the arboretum. “If you could do only one thing for your garden, let it be compost,” said Boss-Ayalon, a master greener who Arboretum plans October composting workshop has studied horticulture, landscape design, and landscape maintenance at the New York Botanical Garden. “The key to abundant growth, flowers, and fruit is compost. Compost keeps plant diseases and pests at bay, and it amends poor and compacted soils. Compost helps manage erosion, reduces your carbon footprint and stores more water,” Boss-Ayalon added. “In the end, my goal is to help clients realize their gardening dreams, giving structure and meaning to their gardens (and) creating an inviting place while lowering all around gardening costs.” Composting garden and kitchen waste also reduces carbon emissions. Even with municipal recycling and com- posting, the average American still throws away approximately 1,200 pounds of waste each year – most of which could be composted. Every pound of waste that is composted instead of being sent to a landfill saves 2.5 pounds of CO2 emissions. Friends of the Arboretum will also have a limited sale of perennials and small trees from the arboretum gardens and special note cards. Event cosponsor, the Glen Rock Environmental Commission, will offer free composting information and composting bins for sale at a discount. Participants are urged to walk or ride their bikes to this event. Autumn tradition Members of Glen Rock Jewish Center Men’s Club recently enjoyed the yearly event of building their sukkah, a temporary construction with a roof of branches. The holiday of Sukkot began this year on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 22 and lasts for seven days. Jewish tradition says Sukkot recalls God’s kindness of protecting them when they wandered in the desert.
