Learn basic computer skills The Glen Rock Public Library, 315 Rock Road, will offer an eight-week basic computer skills class. This course for beginners will cover mouse skills, names and functions of computer components, taskbars, and folders. Choose Wednesdays from 7 to 8 p.m., beginning Sept. 29, or Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m., starting Oct. 2. Registration is required and space is limited. Library seeks donations of best-sellers The Glen Rock Library is asking patrons to consider donating those summer reads, DVDs, and music CDs to the library. With a 30 percent cut in the library’s purchasing budget, Director Roz Pelcyger is looking for ways to keep up with the demand for best-sellers. Donated items not included in the collection will be given to the Friends for the 2011 Book Sale. The Friends of the Library will begin collecting books, DVDs, and music CDs for the 2011 Book Sale after Jan. 1, 2011. Both staff and Friends request that people do not bring in their items for the Book Sale from years prior to 2010 at this time, as the library has no storage space. Football boosters hold Food Drive The Glen Rock Boosters Club will hold a Food Drive on Saturday, Oct. 2 at the high school football game played against Rutherford. Non-perishable food items will be collected and donated to the Center for Food Action. Anyone who brings a non-perishable food item to the ticket gate will be admitted to the game free of charge. The game will start at 1 p.m. at Glen Rock High School, 400 Hamilton Avenue in Glen Rock. Community School offers shows, trips The Glen Rock Community School will be offering a variety of shows and trips this fall. Front mezzanine seats are available for “Million Dollar Quartet” on Tuesday, Nov. 9. The show will start at 7 p.m. and the bus will depart at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are $99 and include transportation. Tickets for the popular “Radio City Christmas Spectacular” are available for Monday, Dec. 13. The price of $89 includes orchestra seats and transportation. The bus will depart at 3 p.m. for the 5 p.m. show. On Oct. 21, area residents are invited to tour the Culinary Institute of America and the Vanderbilt Mansion. The bus will leave Glen Rock at 8:30 a.m. and return at approximately 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $89, which includes transportation, both tours, and lunch at the Culinary Institute. A day trip to Manhattan is planned for Tuesday, Nov. 2. The day will begin with a guided tour of Lincoln Center, followed by lunch, and the King Tut exhibit. Tickets are $99 and include transportation, admission to tour and exhibit, and lunch. Teens to discuss Vaughn novel “Pride of Baghdad,” by Brian K. Vaughn and illustrated by Niko Henrichon, is the teen book discussion selection for Oct. 4. A highly-celebrated graphic novel, “Pride of Baghdad” tells the story of lions that experience brief freedom when the Baghdad Zoo is destroyed during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Beneath the action-filled plot and stunning imagery is a lesson about the consequences of war. These informal sessions meet every other Monday at 7:30 p.m. This program is supported by the Friends of the Glen Rock Public Library. Satrapi memoir featured at festival The Glen Rock Library’s Foreign Film Festival will continue Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. with “Persepolis.” Based on the critically-acclaimed graphic novel of the same name, this autobiographical tale captures the trials and tribulations of
growing up female in Iran in the 1970s. The energy and tumult of the revolution provides a turbulent backdrop to Marjane Satrapi’s memoir about family, identity, and rebellion. Glen Rock resident Jerry Lerner will serve as the facilitator. Area residents are invited to view the film and join the discussion. There is no fee, and registration is not necessary. The programs will take place in the library’s lower level. An elevator is available. Film programs are funded by the Friends of the Library. Street fair coming up The Glen Rock Autumn Craft Street Fair will be held on Sunday, Oct. 3 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, with 100 quality exhibitors who will be set up along Rock Road.
There will be a large children’s area with pony rides and a petting zoo, festival food, and entertainment. Panel to discuss elder care The Glen Rock Library, The SOURCE, and the Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff will present “No Parent Left Behind” on Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. at the Glen Rock Library, 315 Rock Road, Glen Rock. This free program will cover the complicated transition that occurs when an adult becomes a care giver to his or her own parent. Judge Russell Teschon will present a professional panel.
