Ridgewood September 22, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 5 Retired Ridgewood teacher and administrator Jane Blakely recently returned to the district to accept the Lloyd Ashby Award. Each year, this award is conferred upon a Ridgewood educator who has been recommended by his or her peers. Nomination forms are kept anonymous as they are being evaluated. Blakely retired as supervisor of English and social studies at Ridgewood High School in June, but was called back to receive the award based on the acclaim of her peers for a job very well done. “She is our captain, and we will be a lost ship in the sea without her,” one Ridgewood teacher said. “However, she leaves behind a map...her wisdom and the guidance that she has devoted to us over the years; and after she has left us, we will continue to succeed in her honor.” Another teacher wrote, “Her kind and gentle manner stands as a beacon of humanity in a world that can become too pressured for those qualities to survive.” “Her drive to keep her curriculum and instruction relevant to the changing needs or interests of our students is incredible,” another teacher said. “From core courses to electives, she works to provide all students with well- Jane Blakely is latest Lloyd Ashby Award winner rounded educational experiences.” “She is by far the most supportive teacher I have ever had,” another of her peers said. “I can go to her with any question or problem, knowing that she will help me do whatever it takes to solve it. From my first day in Ridgewood, I knew I had an ally and an advocate.” Dr. Daniel Fishbein, superintendent of schools, called Blakely a model of intellect, grace, and sensitivity. “Her influence in Ridgewood will be felt long after she has moved on to other adventures in her life.” J.
