Police set Child Safety Seat Clinic The Ridgewood Police Department will conduct a Child Safety Seat Clinic on Sept. 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. at police headquarters. Residents are invited to attend and should expect to spend between 30 minutes and one hour. Artist to address Women’s Guild Mohamed Khalil will share his story as an artist, display a gallery of his artwork, and then turn bits and pieces of found objects into a sculpture at the Oct. 6 meeting of the Women’s Guild of Ridgewood. The meeting will be held at the Old Paramus Reformed Church at 1:15 p.m. The public is invited. Khalil’s artistic style is influenced by things dear to him: city surroundings in Paterson where he works at the museum, and his Middle Eastern heritage. Nominated by Congressman William Pascrell Jr., he was given the honor of creating a Christmas tree ornament for the 2009 White House. A freewill offering will be appreciated. Cultural Society hosts luncheon The Asian American Cultural Society will begin its twenty-fifth year on Wednesday, Sept. 22 with a welcome back luncheon at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 14 Hope Street, Ridgewood. The event will begin with coffee at 10:30 a.m. The group meets every Wednesday and offers programs of music, art, travel, and health, and several day trips a year. ESL classes offered at West Side Non-native speakers of English are invited to attend English as a Second Language classes at West Side Presbyterian Church, 6 Varian Fry Way in Ridgewood, starting on Oct. 5. These free, 90-minute classes are open to the public. Each Tuesday at 10 a.m., a communicative skills class focuses on speaking and listening, vocabulary, and grammar. Cultural information and basic coping skills for living in another country are also part of the program. At 1 p.m. on Tuesdays, the ESL reading group discusses current literature selected by members of the group. On Fridays, an ESL Bible Study takes place at 1 p.m. Participants read and discuss passages from the Bible.
Program leader Kathy Koop holds a graduate degree in teaching ESL, and has been helping people improve their English language skills for more than 20 years. Mothers’ group celebrates The Our Lady of Mount Carmel MOMs Group will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 9:30 a.m. in the parish center, 1 Passaic Street, Ridgewood. Child care will be provided. The group is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary. Monthly meetings include speakers, group discussions, book club, recipe club, tennis, playgroups, faith sharing groups, and more. Moms of all faiths and ages are welcome. Family service offered Families are invited to a Participatory Family Service on Friday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. at Temple Israel & Jewish Community Center in Ridgewood. There will be singing, stories, and Shabbat led by Rabbi David J. Fine, Cantor Caitlin Bromberg, and Director of Education Rabbi Sharon Litwin. The service is geared toward families with children of all ages, especially those ages four through 13. A celebratory Oneg Shabbat dessert reception will follow. Trick contest held at skate park On Oct. 9, Ridgewood Parks and Recreation will host “The Best Trick Contest,” at the Ridgewood Skate Park. This event is open to all skateboarders who have pre-registered. (Rain date: Oct. 10.) The event, hosted by Ketan Malhotra, will begin at 11 a.m. The contest schedule is as follows: beginner level, 11 to 11:30 a.m.; intermediate level, 11:30 a.m. to noon; and advanced level, 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Prizes will be awarded to the top contestants. The cost to enter the contest is $20. All entrees must be received by Sept. 22. Stenciled T-shirts are included in the price of registration. Flu vaccines available The Valley Hospital Department of Community Health and the Ridgewood and Ho-Ho-Kus Board of Health will offer flu and pneumonia vaccines on Oct. 18 from 9 a.m. to
noon at the senior lounge in Village Hall, 131 North Maple Avenue. Registration is required; call (201) 291-6090. Flu and pneumonia vaccines are covered by traditional Medicare Part B. Recipients must present their card at the time of service. Anyone with an HMO may choose to go to his or her primary care provider or pay $27 for a flu vaccination. Pneumonia vaccines will be available for those who have never had a previous pneumonia vaccination. The cost is $35. Flu shots are encouraged for those who are age 65 and over, those with chronic illnesses, pregnant women, and children -- especially those between six months and five years of age. Fiber Arts Festival set New Jersey Fiber Arts Festival will be held Oct. 1 and 2 at the Unitarian Society of Ridgewood, 113 Cottage Place in Ridgewood. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 1, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 2. This event will feature work by knitters, crocheters, quilters, weavers, needle pointers, embroiderers, spinners, lace-makers, felters, dyers, and rug hookers. There will also be workshops, demonstrations, lectures, and fiber items for sale. Admission is $8, $7 for seniors, and will include a gift bag and a contest ticket.
