Four candidates file for unexpired term on council
Four candidates have filed for the Nov. 2 election to fill and lone seat left vacant on the Ridgewood Village Council when Council Member Anne Zusy died in office earlier this year. The four candidates for Zusy’s unexpired term are Stephen Wellinghorst, Louis N. Lembo, Russell Forenza, and Russell Train, each of whom dropped off a nominating petition by the official deadline last Thursday with one percent of the signatures of registered voters. No biographical information was available at press time. Originally, the village’s governing body had expected to appoint a successor for the remainder of Zusy’s unexpired term, but council members decided that allowing the public to choose the interim council member would better fulfill the intent of Ridgewood’s non-partisan electoral process. Candidates in Ridgewood run not as members of a political party, but as individuals or as members of local slates not linked to national parties. Each candidate must produce a nominating petition with the signatures of one percent of Ridgewood’s current registered voters. The regular elections take place every other year in May, and the council reorganizes on July 1. At that time, a mayor and deputy mayor are selected from among the council’s members. J. KOSTER
