September 15, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 Area Wyckoff sues Ridgewood over rate increase by John Koster Wyckoff has filed suit to repeal the 21 percent water rate increase the Ridgewood Water Company has imposed on customers in Wyckoff, Glen Rock, Midland Park, and Ridgewood. “We feel this suit is without merit and it’s unfortunate that it’s going to cost thousands of dollars to the people of Wyckoff,” Ridgewood Village Manager Ken Gabbert said last week. Glen Rock had taken part in demanding the disclosure of figures, but was not formally part of the suit, Glen Rock Borough Administrator Lenora Benjamin reported last week. The class action suit seeks the complete repeal of the latest increase on behalf of all customers -- an increase Gabbert said was necessary to maintain the infrastructure and protect the quality of the Ridgewood Water Company’s artesian water sources. Residents currently pay $4 for every 1,000 gallons, up from $3.32 under the previous rate. The three mayors of towns outside Ridgewood, however, had sent a letter stating that money collected through water bills was going to fund general Ridgewood operations rather than the four-town water company, which has offices in Ridgewood, field headquarters in Midland Park, and wells and pumps in all four towns. Joseph Fiorenzo, a former Wyckoff mayor and practicing attorney, is handling the township’s side of the suit pro bono. Wyckoff officials have long complained that, during watering restrictions, Wyckoff police have been far more stringent than Ridgewood police in enforcing lawn sprinkler bans, even though Wyckoff reportedly has more wells and supplies more water than any of the other communities. Wyckoff had reached out to Glen Rock and Midland Park to urge a combined legal action. However, Glen Rock and Midland Park, while supporting the requests for disclosure, had not joined in the legal action.
