Ramsey dispatcher named patrolman in Midland Park
The Midland Park Police Department has a new recruit. Michael Canonico of Lincoln Park was appointed last week to fill an opening on the 12-man department. Patrolman Al Maas retired in December and a probationary patrolman was not rehired, leaving the opening. “The three finalists were all excellent. He’s a bright guy and comes very highly recommended from Ramsey,” said Police Chief John Casson. “I’m glad that we are finally hiring at least one person. We’ve been short for so long. We’ve had a lot of overtime and some illness, so it’s been hard on the men,” he added. Canonico, a dispatcher in Ramsey for the past year, graduated from the Essex County Police Academy in February, thereby making him eligible to be on patrol within the borough sooner that nonacademy recruit. Casson said that he will get six to eight weeks of field training to familiarize himself with local procedures before riding on his own. The 23-year-old officer graduated from Montville Township High School and Montclair State University and is a member of the Pine Brook Volunteer Fire Department and the CERT team in Lincoln Park. Councilman Bud O’Hagan, police liaison, explained the selection process. “Midland Park received more than 400 applications for the police position. The applications were reviewed and culled initially by our police chief and his senior officers. As the numbers were reduced to a more manageable 14, the Police and Personnel Liaisons (Council Persons O’Hagan, Holst and Peet) each were given an opportunity to read and digest the resumes, and accompanying documents. The list was further reduced to six prospects. The six prospects were again returned to the police department for them to interview and suggest acceptable finalists. The Midland Park council met with the three selectees. After a private closed door interview with each candidate and a spirited discussion amongst the council members, Michael Canonico was chosen unanimously to be our next patrolman,” said O’Hagan. Canonico will be sworn in at the council’s Sept. 23 meeting.

School board moves offices
The offices of the Midland Park administration and board of education, which had been located at Highland School since the early 1900s, are now located at Midland Park High School. They were previously in the lower level of Highland School. “Dr. (Marie) Cirasella felt that 70 percent of all the school system’s activities and programs are at the high school. She felt her team should be closer to the action,” explained Board of Education President Robert Schiffer. The new superintendent started her position in the district July 1. The office shift was done at minimal cost to the district. The administrative team – the superintendent, the business administrator/board secretary and their support staff – took over offices formerly occupied by the special services team, which moved into the guidance offices. Guidance took over the continuing education offices, and continuing education is in the former athletic director’s office. The vacant school board offices will likely house a conference room and physical therapy. Board of education meetings, which are held on the first and third Tuesday of the month, will continue to be held in the Highland School library.
