Book club to read nonfiction Glen Rock Reads Nonfiction, a new book discussion group at the Glen Rock Public Library, will hold its inaugural meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. under the leadership of borough resident Jerry Lerner. The group’s first selection will be “Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Science and Sex” by Mary Roach. Copies of the book are available at the reference desk. The “New Yorker” dubbed Roach the funniest science writer in the country. In tracing the history of sex research, Roach provides a balanced review of its quirkier aspects (e.g., sex machines and the effects of polyester pants on sexual activity in rats) with a primer on sexual function. The author flings wide the closed doors behind which the scientific study of coitus has traditionally been conducted. Roach details the careers of sex researchers Alfred Kinsey, William Masters and Virginia Johnson, Marie Bonaparte (Napoleon’s great-grand-niece), and others. This informal discussion group welcomes all interested area residents. For more information, call (201) 670-3970. The library is located at 315 Rock Road. Fall kick off for Activities Club The Activities Club will begin its fall schedule Sept. 21 at the Community Church. The 1:30 p.m. meeting will feature a presentation on senior financial management. The club will host a dance at the Community Church on Saturday Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. Stan Feldman will present music of the ‘50s, ‘60s, and ‘70s; Steve Lory will handle lighting and sound. Anyone interested in attending the dance or the club’s activities may visit theactivitiesclub.org. Retired or semi-retired men who are interested in joining the Activities Club should contact Rick Colton, membership chairman, at (201) 445-0755. Center offers High Holy Days programs Join Glen Rock Jewish Center for the High Holy Days. On Sept. 18, a Yizkor service will be held at 1:15 p.m. This service is open and free to the community. Please note that tickets are required for all other Yom Kippur services. For more information, call (201) 652-6624, e-mail www.membership.org, or visit www.grjc.org. Vendors sought for fall boutique Glen Rock Jewish Center is looking for vendors for its Fall Boutique planned for Sunday, Oct. 17 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the center located at 682 Harristown Road in Glen Rock. Call (201) 652-6624. Tea at Two meetings resume The Glen Rock Library’s Tea at Two on Tuesday Book Discussion will resume on Sept. 21 at 2 p.m. The group meets the third Tuesday of each month. The September selection will be “The Daughter of Time” by Josephine Tey. All readers are invited to this informal discussion group where tea and cookies are served. Multiple copies are available at the reference desk. “The Daughter of Time,” a combination of the detective story and a work of history, has been selected as one of the top 100 mystery books of all time. Tey recreates one of history’s most infamous crimes: the killing of the Little Princes in the Tower. In the classic best-selling novel, Inspector Alan Grant of Scotland Yard, recuperating from a broken leg, becomes fascinated with a contemporary portrait of Richard III that bears no resemblance to the Wicked Uncle of history. Grant determines to find out once and for all, with the help of the British Museum and an American scholar, what kind of man Richard Plantagenet really was and to solve the murder. For additional information, call (201) 670-3970.

Foreign films featured The Glen Rock Library, 315 Rock Road in Glen Rock, will be presenting a Foreign Film Festival the third Tuesday of every month from Sept. 21 through May 17. The first presentation, “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie,” will be Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. Glen Rock resident Jerry Lerner will be the facilitator. “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie,” written and directed by Luis Buñuel, is a complex, shifting, virtually plotless web of dreams within dreams centered around a group of six outwardly respectable upper middle class members of society and their attempts to have a meal together. This film won the Oscar in 1973 for Best Foreign Language Film. Internationally, it has garnered awards for Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Direction. Area residents are invited to view the film and join the discussion. There is no fee. Registration is not necessary. The programs will take place in the library’s lower level.
