Eagle Scout candidate to clear Ho-Ho-Kus Brook
by John Koster Ridgewood Eagle Scout candidate Aidan Angus won the Ridgewood Village Council’s wholehearted support for his plan to remove saplings and brush from two island sandbars in Ho-Ho-Kus Brook to eliminate flooding during heavy rains. “I’m impressed with your action plans and with your safety plan,” Mayor Keith Killion told Angus last week. “I’m impressed with your presentation tonight, and I’m impressed that you’re saving us a lot of money.” Angus, 16, said that the last time the sandbars in the book were cleared of trees and shrubs, the cost was $4,000. His project, to be carried out by Boy Scouts from Troop 7, would be an all-volunteer effort. Village Engineer Christopher Rutishauser was not present at the meeting, but he worked with Angus and supports the initiative. Angus explained that the trees and shrubbery can create temporary natural dams that cause flooding on public and private property. One of the two small islands in question is in the vicinity of Graydon Pool. Angus said only strong swimmers would be allowed to work on the islands, and a lifeguard and a first aid expert would be part of each work team. He estimated that about 10 people would work on the project in increments and said he would start as soon as he passed out leaflets explaining to neighbors that the project had been approved by the council.
