Ridgewood Notes
Temple offers Selichot film, late service Temple Israel and Jewish Community Center of Ridgewood invites all who wish to join the synagogue’s community in preparing spiritually for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur to attend a Selichot film and services at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 4. The program will begin with a showing of a classic episode of the original “Star Trek” TV series followed by study of key rabbinic texts on good and evil related to the theme of the episode and the high holy days. Temple Israel’s Rosh Hashanah Services will be held Sept. 9 and 10, and Yom Kippur services on Sept. 17 (Kol Nidre) and 18. There is an opportunity for non-member families to purchase High Holy Day tickets. Temple Israel is located at 475 Grove Street in Ridgewood. Fall schedule, children’s hour announced Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church has announced that its 9:30 a.m. Sunday worship hour for the summer will continue through Sept. 5. “Welcome Back Sunday” will be held at 10 a.m. on Sept. 12. This special worship service will be followed by fellowship at a traditional Picnic in the Pines. From 4 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 12, there will be an opportunity to “walk the labyrinth.” This ancient practice was used in European cathedrals as a substitute for pilgrimages when travel to Jerusalem was too dangerous. It is said that when one fully engages in the “walk” of the labyrinth, one can experience quieting of the mind, an opening of the heart, and a calling forth of a sense of wholeness, oneness, peace, and possibility. The walk is completed in silence at each individual’s own pace. Children’s “Spirit Hour,” for those in preschool through grade eight, will begin Sept. 19. This program aims to instill a spirit of caring and doing for others. Children will gather around Pastor Marsden for a brief lesson and then move to activities at the OPRC Education Building. Children from surrounding communities are welcome to participate. Child care for infants is provided. The barrier-free church is located at 660 East Glen Avenue at Route 17 South. For more information, call (201) 444-5933 or visit oldparamus.org. Registration opens at religious school Temple Israel of Ridgewood’s Religious School still has limited space for the 2010-11 religious school year, which begins Sept. 12. Temple Israel offers formal religious school programs for children in pre-kindergarten through seventh grade. Pre-kindergarten is open to children ages three and four and meets monthly on Sunday mornings for two hours. Pre-K is open to children of members and nonmembers. Classes for students in kindergarten through second grade are open to children of members and nonmembers and meet weekly on Sunday mornings throughout the school year. Temple members are encouraged to register their children in third through seventh grades for religious school. These classes meet twice weekly and provide students with academic and experiential knowledge of Jewish tradition. For further information or an application, contact Director of Education Rabbi Sharon Litwin at (201) 444-9320.
