Voters have choice of four candidates for single seat
by John Koster The Ridgewood Candidates Night held last week featured the four candidates who are seeking the single seat available this year on the Ridgewood Village Council. They include Russ Forenza, Louis Lembo, Oliver Train, and Stephen Wellinghorst. Registered voters will cast their ballots as part of the general election on Nov. 2. The one seat was left vacant by the death of Councilwoman Anne Zusy, who was in the midst of her first term when she died earlier this year. The council had expected to appoint a new member to fill out Zusy’s unexpired term, but the council members decided to throw the vacant seat open in the general election as a more equitable way to determine Zusy’s successor. Each candidate had to display a nominating petition with the signatures of at least one percent of Ridgewood’s registered voters to earn an official place on the ballot. Forenza, a long-time Ridgewood resident and executive with the City of Paterson; Lembo, a multi-generation resident of Ridgewood and hospital department manager before his recent retirement; Train, an executive and business owner with a background in banking and electronic technology; and Wellinghorst, an attorney and former municipal judge who has served on the Ridgewood Board of Adjustment, answered four questions posed by the League of Woman Voters. The candidates also fielded written questions from the capacity crowd at the courtroom of Ridgewood Village Hall. The candidates agreed on many key problems to be faced: the tough economy and its impact on Ridgewood’s finances, the future of Graydon Pool, pedestrian safety, and the downtown parking situation concerned all of them – but there were also a few divergent viewpoints expressed at the meeting. The question of whether each candidate would approve the expansion of Valley Hospital, a matter that will be the subject of a Ridgewood Council study and possible change to the zoning ordinance, brought the clearest divergence. Forenza said that he would vote “yes” on expansion and said he believes it is time to move forward. Lembo said he has not had a chance to study the plans in detail, but as
things now stand, he would have to vote “no.” Train said at some length that he was concerned with the concept of amending the master plan under outside pressure. Wellinghorst said he would support an ordinance that would protect residential property values in the neighborhood and assured a safe and reasonably-timed construction process for the expansion. All four candidates support perpetuating Graydon Pool as a lake-like entity. This issue became controversial when proposals for a complex of rectangular pools and water (continued on page 8)
