Yoga classes slated The Ridgewood Parks and Recreation Department will offer yoga to middle school and high school students on Tuesdays beginning Nov. 9. Middle school students will meet from 3:45 to 4:45 p.m. High school students may join the program from 4:45 to 5:45. Benefits include stress relief, improved stamina, flexibility, coordination, and balance; and better sleep, digestion, focus, intuition, self-esteem, emotional control, and academic achievement. Participants should bring a mat and wear comfortable clothing. Classes are held at the Stable located at 259 North Maple Avenue. The cost is $75 for six sessions. HILT plans events Dr. Saul Broudy, Ph.D., noted folklorist, will present “Singing Workers: American Occupational Folksongs” to the members of HILT on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. Dr. Broudy will discuss the role music played in the lives of railroad workers, coal miners, farmers, truck drivers, and other workers. This program is made possible by the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, is free and open to the public. HILT’s next program will be a trip to the Cinema 12 complex in Parsippany on Thursday, Nov. 18. Lunch will follow at Nero’s Grill in Livingston. The bus will depart from Graydon Pool at 10 a.m. and return at 4:45 p.m. The cost of the trip for HILT members is $30, and $35 for nonmembers. Ridgewood residents age 55 and older are invited to join Highlights in Leisure Time, a senior organization under the auspices of the Ridgewood’s Department of Parks and Recreation. Students hold Coat Drive Ridgewood High School students in Eileen D’Elia’s sophomore and junior English classes are sponsoring a Coat Drive to benefit Jersey Cares, a foundation that gives to people in New Jersey who cannot afford coats. Gently used coats will be collected at the high school through Dec. 1. Montessori school holds Open House The Village School will host two Open Houses. The dates are Oct. 27 from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and Nov. 11 from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Attendees will have the chance to meet with the faculty and staff, talk to students, tour the school’s facility, and learn more about the benefits of Montessori education through the middle school years. Masquerade Ball planned for Mischief Night The Ridgewood YMCA will sponsor the Mischief Night Masquerade Ball on Oct. 30 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ridgewood YMCA. Singles and couples are welcome at the event, which will begin with a free, half-hour ballroom dance lesson from Dance Master Lestat. The evening will continue with dancing and refreshments. Prizes will also be awarded for the best costume, although wearing costumes is optional. Art docent workshop offered TIC TOC Theater, a volunteer arts organization dedicated to bringing fine and performing arts to children in Bergen County, will hold its autumn art docent workshop for adults on Thursday, Oct. 28, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at The Ridgewood Public Library. This year’s workshop will cover “The Art of Type Design” and “How Type Impacts Our Children.” From the printed word to its digital counterpart, type is used all day, every day. This unique lecture will be presented by Ray Cruz, a multi-awarded font designer and creator of type for the Detroit Lions, Estee Lauder, U.S. Postal Service, and The Market Basket. Upward Basketball hosts events Upward Basketball will hold a December mini camp in preparation for the new season. The camp is open to children in grades one through six. All campers receive an Upward basketball T-shirt, water bottle, and instruction and playing time. First and second grade boys and girls will meet Dec. 4 from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost is $40 per child and the group is limited to 40 children. A two-day mini camp for third and fourth grade boys and girls will be held Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon and on Dec. 5 from noon to 3 p.m. The cost for one session is $40, and $70 for both days. Enrollment size is limited to 40 children. Fifth and sixth grade boys will meet Dec. 5 from 3 to 7 p.m. The cost is $50 per children and enrollment is limited to 12. Ridgewood Notes Veterans Day ceremony set American Legion Post 53 in Ridgewood will hold a Veterans Day ceremony at the monument in Veterans Memorial Park at Van Neste Square, Ridgewood at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. The pubic is invited to participate in this service honoring the nation’s veterans. Local musicians to perform The Christ Church Ridgewood Concert Series will open Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the church. The concert will feature violinist Dimitri Hadjipetkov and pianist Marija Zorjan-Madison performing works by Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, and Paganini.
