Page 18 THE VILLADOM TIMES II & IV • October 20, 2010 ‘Secretariat’ (continued from Entertainment page) concerns about it are never resolved. At one point, viewers learn that Penny and Hollis owe $6 million in property taxes. This rather serious development is left dangling when Penny plants her feet firmly in the saw- dust and says they will somehow get through the crisis. Really? How? The IRS might be interested so they can pass the information on to others who have outstanding tax bills. Rated PG, “Secretariat” will entertain families if they don’t ask too many questions, love looking at beautiful horses, and enjoy watching well-staged races. What is missing from the film is what, we are told in the movie, is the essence of a champ: heart. play, which starred Brecht’s second wife, Helene Wiegel, through audio recordings, photographs, and interviews with Brecht’s former assistant. The sole extra is commentary from Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Michael Moore. “Oceans” (Disney Nature) illustrates with breathtaking photography the wonders of the deep sea, and the surface and shores. Many of its images have never been seen before. One of the most dramatic sequences is a mid-ocean feeding frenzy in which a pod of dolphins attacks a school of sardines from below while hundreds of birds dive-bomb into the sea to pick off their share with determined precision and almost perfect accuracy. The scene is filmed from many angles -- underwater, above, and at the surface -- providing a truly memorable example of nature unfettered. There is an assortment of odd creatures including narwhals, known as unicorn fish; the sea dragon, a creature that looks part skeleton and part Hollywood special effect; the Spanish dancer, a sea slug that moves through the water with its multicolored body billowing like a flamenco skirt; a bunch of eels that line up with the precision of Radio City Music Hall Rockettes; and the Chinese sheepshead wrasse, looking like a bizarre aquatic cousin of the Elephant Man. These images are wonderful, but the movie leaves you on your own to make sense of them. The narration by Pierce Brosnan is uninformative and mostly reiterates exactly what is being seen. Viewers are left with many unanswered questions, and that is very frustrating, since the creatures definitely pique interest. The two-disc combo pack contains both Blu-ray and DVD versions of the film and three featurettes. “Oceans” is also available as a single-disc DVD. DVDs (continued from Restaurant page) clear at the outset that almost every member of the group will meet his end in one gruesome way or another and only a small remnant will last to the final credits. The two-disc Blu-ray edition contains a digital copy, director commentary, several featurettes, and deleted and extended scenes. “The Six Wives of Henry Lefay” (National Entertainment Media) tells the outrageous tale of a man (Tim Allen) who loved and married too many women. After Henry is presumed dead, following his disappearance after a skydiving accident, his daughter Barbara (Elisha Cuthbert) is left to make the funeral arrangements. But when his current wife and five exes wage an aggressive power struggle over his estate, Barbara is caught in the middle. The rest of the plot is predictable and the gags are strictly TV sit-com caliber. Allen, who fits the role of the rich, irrepressibly romantic title character well, deserves sharper material. There are no extras. “Theater of War” (Lorber Films) is a fascinating documentary by John Walter chronicling the 2006 Shakespeare in the Park production of Bertolt Brecht’s “Mother Courage and Her Children.” The film focuses on how star Meryl Streep prepares for her role, director George C. Wolfe stages the production, and playwright Tony Kushner gives the show an updated interpretation. Streep is known for her many superb screen performances, but this film shows the often-awkward, wartsand-all rehearsal process, when a production is molded like wet clay into a tight, focused show. Director Walter includes information about the original production of the Answer to Last Week’s Puzzle Answer to Last Week’s Puzzle
