Page 6 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • October 13, 2010 Emmanuel asks... Can You Help? by John Koster Ridgewood Agreement for group care home may be altered “Nothing has changed with regard to the scope or the focus of the project. The residents will be extremely high functioning, independent adults, and still we’ll have a livein staff member, whose home will be there.” Tozzoli said. Recently, Ridgewood officials learned that the agreement between Ridgewood, West Bergen Mental Healthcare, and HUD was being “re-worded.” One official said HUD appears to have deemed the limitation to only Asperger’s patients to be unduly restrictive. West Bergen Mental Health had been slated to make a presentation before last week’s council work session, but the hearing was postponed until Oct. 27. Mayor Keith Killion -- who, as a councilman, had voted against permitting the group home in the Broad Street neighborhood -- said the nature of the re-wording would not be certain until the papers from HUD had arrived. Neighbors strongly and unanimously opposed the construction of the home in their residential-commercial neighborhood. Broad Street near the Glen Rock border has traditionally been a close-knit neighborhood, where many residents are life-long homeowners and prize the proximity of their homes to churches and friends. The residents who objected to the group home plan said their neighborhood has been imposed upon enough and, if the home were necessary, it should be located somewhere else in Ridgewood. The Ridgewood Village Council is awaiting the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s rewording of the acceptance standards for a 10-unit group care home slated for Broad Street. The council supported the initiative by West Bergen Mental Healthcare, which is the lead agency for the group home, because an opportunity arose to fund the building with HUD money at no cost to the Ridgewood taxpayers. At the time the council approved the project, West Bergen Mental Healthcare said the tenants in the 10-unit independent-living home would be restricted to individuals with Asperger’skaren/janine 4-29-09 Syndrome, a condition related to autism. According to West Bergen’s Executive Director Michael EmmanuelHelp3x.75(4-29-09) Tozzoli, HUD wants the project to be inclusive of developmentally-disabled adults that have Asperger’s-like 3 x .75 conditions and other similar disorders who may not meet the exact criteria. Asperger’s Syndrome is one of several related disorders on the autism spectrum. Meet the Candidates A Meet the Candidates program will be held on Oct. 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the Sydney V.
