Page 4 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • October 13, 2010 Ridgewood Rabbi David J. Fine of Temple Israel earns doctorate Rabbi David J. Fine, the spiritual leader of Temple Israel and JCC in Ridgewood, recently received a Ph.D. from the History Department at the CUNY Graduate Center. Rabbi Fine’s dissertation, “Jewish at the Front: Jewish Officers in the German Army in World War I, traces the integration of Jews in Germany’s army during World War I, and qualifies the importance of anti-Semitism. The dissertation and Rabbi Fine’s other doctoral studies were the result of over a decade of reading, thinking, learning, and seven visits to Germany. The dissertation includes narrative anecdotal evidence combined with quantitative evidence culled from the cemeteries, published sources, and archival material in Munich, Berlin, and New York in order to clarify the extent of Jewish integration in the German army. “I find that Jewish soldiers found integration and that anti-Semitism was not a significant factor in their war experience. Theirs was a war where they found themselves as Jews, men, soldiers and Germans, fighting for a future that might have been,” Rabbi Fine said. Drawing on his extensive research, he will teach a class at Temple Israel titled “Sunday Morning Survey of GermanJewish History.” The course will cover the medieval world of Rashi, arguably the greatest Jewish Biblical and Talmudic commentator of all time; continue on to Moses Mendelssohn and the 18thcentury Enlightenment; and end in the modern period, reading of the devastation of the Holocaust; and the reconstruction, against all odds, of German Jewry and today’s German-Israeli relations. The course will be held on Sunday mornCounty communities. Weekly Shabbat services are held on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 9 a.m. During the week, minyan takes place on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. and Tuesday nights at 7:45 p.m. For more information, call (201) 444-9320, e-mail office@synagogue. org, or visit www.synagogue.org.
