October 13, 2010 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • Page 3 Glen Rock New ordinance would halt on-street commuter parking by John Koster The Glen Rock Borough Council has introduced an ordinance to shorten the hours of permitted street parking on Devonshire Place so out-of-town commuters cannot leave their cars parked all day on the residential street. Mayor John van Keuren explained that the ordinance, as introduced on Oct. 7, would limit street parking to four hours at a time between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday between Rock Road and Buckingham Place. The ordinance will be considered for final adoption at the Oct. 21 meeting of the Glen Rock Borough Council. “Our primary motivation is safety - visual safety and street width safety,” Mayor van Keuren said last week. Minna Greenberg, a resident who attended the meeting to receive a League of Women Voters proclamation certificate with several other members, was surprised by the ordinance but said it was a good idea. “I feel sorry for the people who have no place to go, but it’s become a parking lot,” she said of the street near her own home and that of her neighbors. Greenberg said she wasn’t sure where the commuter cars all came from, but that she had sometimes seen one with New York license plates. On-street parking in several other areas of Glen Rock has been curtailed by ordinance to reduced hours, so that personal friends or trades people can visit residential homes but all-day parking is not viable for commuters. Glen Rock has two railroad station stops, a regular bus stop just outside Glen Rock Borough Hall, and a commuter shuttle bus to take residential commuters to the railroad stations and the bus stop.
