ccording to the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgeons website, (www. abpns.org) there are only two board-certified pediatric neurosurgeons in New Jersey. As a fellowship-trained, pediatric neurosurgeon, Dr. Cathy Mazzola treats children with traumatic brain injury, concussions, hydrocephalus, brain tumors, spine tumors, tethered spinal cord, craniofacial diagnoses, and plagiocephaly. She also cares for adult neurosurgical patients with congenital disorders, like cerebral palsy and spina bifida. Dr. Mazzola has written many articles about brain tumors, spina bifida, and brain injury that have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Mazzola has over 15 years of experience in neurological surgery. She was trained by Drs. Peter Carmel, Arno Fried, Fred Epstein, Leland Albright, Ian Pollack, and David Adelson -- all well-known pediatric neurosurgeons. Less than five percent of all neurosurgeons are women, and there are only a few pediatric neurosurgeons in New Jersey. As the mother of five children, Dr. Mazzola understands the responsibilities of parenthood. When she sees children with developmental disabilities, she is able to empathize with parents who have children with special needs. Dr. Mazzola began volunteering for the Congress of Neurosurgeons (CNS), the

Dr. Mazzola’s manuscript discussing the risks of work hour reduction in neurosurgical residency was selected as the lead article in the August 2010 NEUROSURGERY journal. As a prominent leader among women in neurosurgery, Dr. Mazzola recognizes her responsibility to mentor to students interested in neurosurgery.
