Brock to discuss bulb planting Debbie Brock of from Holland Acres in Paramus will address the Glen Rock Garden Club on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 7:45 p.m. Brock’s discussion will cover the planting of spring bulbs and how to protect them from animals. She will also include information on forcing bulbs to grow inside. All are welcome. Admission is free and refreshments will be served. The meeting will be held in the municipal annex, 678 South Maple Avenue, Glen Rock. Satrapi memoir featured at festival The Glen Rock Library’s Foreign Film Festival will continue Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. with “Persepolis.” Based on the critically-acclaimed graphic novel of the same name, this autobiographical tale captures the trials and tribulations of growing up female in Iran in the 1970s. The energy and tumult of the revolution provides a turbulent backdrop to Marjane Satrapi’s memoir about family, identity, and rebellion. Glen Rock resident Jerry Lerner will serve as the facilitator. Area residents are invited to view the film and join the discussion. There is no fee, and registration is not necessary. The programs will take place in the library’s lower level. New date for WICS Social The Glen Rock Women in Community Service, also known as WICS, will host a Membership Social on Wednesday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. at a member’s home. The event offers the opportunity to learn about WICS programs and how to become involved. It also provides a time to mingle and make new friends. A non-profit organization open to adult women of all ages, WICS focuses on community service through outreach to numerous local area groups in need. Theater company benefit underway The Glen Rock High School Theater Company, in association with the Glen Rock Inn, will hold a dining fundraiser to benefit the theater group. Supporters may purchase a gift certificate for the Glen Rock Inn during the month of October. Gift certificates are available in $25, $50, and $100 denominations. Opportunities are available in acting, directing, playwrighting, stage management, and technical theater. In addition to the annual fall production, in the spring the company presents a Festival of Original Plays, written and produced by students. This fall, the company will present “Inherit the Wind,” the Lawrence and Lee dramatization of the infamous Scopes Monkey Trial. GRHS sponsors Big Money Contest The Glen Rock High School Grad Ball of 2011 is sponsoring a Big Money Contest. One $15,000 grand prize will be awarded, along with 10 additional prizes of $500 each. Only 400 tickets will be sold. The cost for each ticket is $100. The winners will be announced at the Grad Ball 2011 Beefsteak Dinner and Fundraiser set for Nov. 20. The Beefsteak Dinner is the largest fundraiser for the graduation ball. This is the 53rd year of the tradition to provide a safe, alcohol-free, celebratory event for the graduating class. Library offers color printing Glen Rock Library computer users may now print their documents in color. All of the Bergen County Cooperative Library System computers were recently upgraded to allow this option. Using capital fund monies remaining from a grant from the borough in 2009, a color laser printer was purchased. Black and white copies remain 10 cents per copy. Color copies are 25 cents each. Deadline is Wednesday at noon.
