Wellinghorst takes oath of office in village
by John Koster Stephen Wellinghorst has officially been sworn in as a member of the Ridgewood Village Council and will begin his service on the five-member governing body. Endorsed by Concerned Citizens of Ridgewood, Wellinghorst was elected during the general election on Nov. 2, besting three other local candidates who also sought the single council seat left vacant by the death of Councilwoman Anne Zusy. An attorney and experienced municipal lawyer and judge in other communities, Wellinghorst previously served on the Ridgewood Zoning Board of Adjustment. He cited “common sense,” his law degree, and municipal experience as his best credentials. Members of the seated council had originally intended to appoint a suitable replacement for Zusy who would serve until the next non-partisan election. But the council members decided it would be more equitable to run the non-partisan council election in tandem with the general election, reducing costs while allowing the residents a stronger voice in their own government. Each candidate who was able to obtain one percent of the signatures of registered voters on his nominating petition was placed on the ballot, which does not permit Republican or Democratic affiliation for local-office election. Observers saw Wellinghorst’s endorsement by the Concerned Citizens of Ridgewood -- a group opposed to rezoning to permit the renovation of Valley Hospital -- as a key factor in his election. Wellinghorst also said he sup-
ports retaining the lake-like appearance of Graydon Pool, while improving the water quality and amenities.
