Sinton Jr. of Mahwah and Peru, Vermont, formerly of Upper Saddle River, died Nov. 11. He was 78. He began his career with Arthur Young in New York in 1955 and retired in 1992 as a partner from its successor company, Ernst & Young, LLP. He then joined Bankers Trust as a managing director and board member of related funds management businesses until his retirement in 2005. He attended Fordham Prep, Columbia University, and the Columbia University Graduate School of Business. He was a member of the Hackensack Golf Club and The New York Athletic Club. He is survived by his wife Susan (nee Creter), his children Jill Polansky of Oakland and Sally Sinton of Melbourne, Australia, four grandchildren, his brother Donald Sinton, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was 47. He was a 1983 graduate of Ridgewood High School. He was the founder and first president of the Ridgewood Racing Association. He is survived by his mother Geraldine Van Houten, his sister Mary Lou, and brothers Thomas and Gregory. He served in the U.S. National Guard. He was the owner of Clover Graphics in Glen Rock. He was a parishioner of Saint Catharine’s R.C. Church in Glen Rock and Saint Francis RC Church of Long Beach Island. He had been a coach of baseball and basketball in Queens and Glen Rock. He was a member of the Glen Ridge Country Club. He is survived by his children of Jill Ann Rosker of Saddle River, and Alexander Zellway of Pompton Plains, three grandchildren, and two step-grandchildren. Christmas season begins at Bethlehem Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 155 Linwood Avenue in Ridgewood, will begin the Christmas season with a concert on Sunday, Nov. 28 at 3 p.m. The free concert will be held in the church sanctuary. The program includes classic and contemporary Christmas songs and instrumentals, and a carol sing along. Greg Caldarone and The New Jersey Brass Quintet will perform a free concert “Christmas: The Joy and Spirit 2010.” Come celebrate this joyous time of year with old classics and contemporary Christmas favorites. Caldarone, award-winning singer and recording artist, will perform Christmas classics such as “O Holy Night” and “Gesu Bambino” and more recent songs, such as Mark Lowry’s “Mary, Did You Know?” and Michael Card’s “Joseph’s Song.’’ Also featured will be David Freidman’s “We Can Be Kind.” The New Jersey Brass Quintet will perform “Christmas: The Joy and Spirit, Ceremonial Music for Brass and Organ” arranged by S. Drummond Wolff and other holiday pieces. The New Jersey Brass Quintet is a non-profit group dedicated to the cultural enrichment of the community it serves. The musical ensemble’s programs include educationally oriented children’s concerts, park concerts in a “Village Brass Band” setting, and special concerts for various occasions in addition to traditional chamber music concerts. Its repertoire ranges from earliest madrigals to contemporary compositions. There is no admission charge; however, a free-will offering will be welcome. CDs will be available at the concert. Menorah lighting and toy collection set Chabad of NWBC and Tons of Toys in Wyckoff are sponsoring a Toy Drive for needy children at the Wyckoff Town Hall Menorah Lighting on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 4 p.m. The free program is open to the entire community and residents of neighboring towns. Donated toys may be dropped off at the store, which is located at 315 Franklin Avenue in the Rock Ledge Shopping Center, or brought to the lighting ceremony. In addition to the menorah lighting, participants will enjoy entertainment, hot Chanukah refreshments, glow-giveaways, and Chazan Ilan Mamber of Beth Rishon, all in a super-sized heated tent. Over 500 new toys collected before and at the event will fill a 15 foot, menorah-shaped hollow frame, making it the largest toy collection menorah in the world. After candles are lit atop the menorah’s branches, the toys will be distributed to children in need throughout New Jersey and in the Crimea. David Charles Van Houten The community is invited to the “Village of Bethlehem” -- Heneveld Hall at the Wyckoff Reformed Church, 580 Wyckoff Avenue, Wyckoff, on Dec. 4 from 3 to 5 p.m. The hall will be transformed into the Village of Bethlehem as it appeared on the night of Jesus’ birth. See what happened as Mary and Joseph entered Bethlehem to participate in the census. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. No reservations are necessary. Light snacks and beverages will be provided as guests of all ages wander throughout the village marketplace surrounded by the sights and sounds of Judea. Children will grind grain and take part in Bible crafts and games. Participants may also visit with the Bethlehem stable animals during the first hour of the event. Local churches combine for Thanksgiving service The Congregations of Abundant Life Reformed Church of Wyckoff and the Rea Avenue Reformed Church of Hawthorne will gather together at the Rea Ave Church on Nov. 24 at 7:30 p.m. to give thanks for God’s blessings. The service will feature Rea Avenue’s Praise Band and Abundant Life’s Choir. Pastors from both churches will participate in the service, and refreshments will follow. Congregations that worship at these two churches will also join in this Thanksgiving Eve service. Those groups include the New Vision Korean Church, Compass Korean Church, and Iglesia Amor Cristiano.
