Bergen Catholic President Br. Brian M. Walsh, C.F.C. presented each of the following individuals with Founders’ Medals: Tenafly resident John Barrett, an alumnus from the Class of 1964; Charles Flynn of Ridgewood, a member of the faculty since 1973; and benefactors Brian (Class of 1974) and Maureen Gallagher of Allendale, and Carmen and Joseph Unanue of Alpine. Barrett, also a graduate of Fordham University, is currently the owner/manager of the Barrett Funeral Home in Tenafly. He is a parishioner of Mount Carmel R.C. Church in Tenafly and serves as a Eucharistic minister and as a member of the church’s Finance Committee. Barrett also serves as a Bergen Catholic Class Chair and as a member of the President’s Club of Fordham University, and previously served on the board of trustees of the Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest. Flynn, currently in his 38th year as a member of the Bergen Catholic High School faculty, has enjoyed one of the longest tenures in the school’s history. Newark State College (now Kean University), he honed his teaching skills as a substitute teacher in the Jersey City Public School System, teaching primarily at Dickinson and Ferris high schools, before arriving at B.C. in the fall of 1973. After many years as a freshman English teacher, Flynn served as chairman of the English department from 1994 to 2007. He also took on the duties of chairman of the fine arts department for two years, and has taught an SAT preparation course since 1980. In 2007, he became a member of the guidance department, working with freshmen and sophomores while continuing to teach English.
