Told from the perspectives of three women, the novel explores the complexities of race relations in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi. Group to discuss Pearl Harbor Day book On Pearl Harbor Day, Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m., the Glen Rock Library’s Nonfiction Book Discussion Group will tackle “Shockwave: Countdown to Hiroshima” by Stephen Walker. Walker provides a detailed history of the atomic bomb from the drawing board to the horrors experienced on the ground. Walker examines all sides of this controversial event, focusing on the important roles of perception and memory. Multiple copies of the book are available at the reference desk. Auxiliary to hear program on heart disease Patricia Delaney, director of Cardiac Outreach at the Valley Hospital’s Center for Heart Health, will present a program on heart disease at the Nov. 22 meeting of the Glen Rock Branch of The Valley Hospital Auxiliary. The program will be presented at 12:30 p.m. at the municipal annex on Maple Avenue. The public is welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served after the talk. Delaney will discuss the unique symptoms that affect women and men, how to protect the heart, and how heart disease is treated. Activities Club host Schuber Pat Schuber, noted historian and lecturer will be the guest speaker at the Activities Club’s Nov. 16 meeting and Open House. Schuber will discuss the Siege of Stalingrad. His presentation will take into account the perspectives of both the Germans and the Russians. This latest information was gained after exhaustive research and visits to Stalingrad. During the Open House, chairmen from the club’s 21 activities will be available. Men interested in bocce, book review and discussion, bowling, bridge, classic movies, computer education, digital photography, science, golf, personal finance, popular music, trips and tours, walking, bicycling, interesting luncheons or volunteering and public service are invited to attend. The meeting and Open House will take place at the Community Church in Glen Rock. High School to perform ‘Inherit the Wind’ The Glen Rock High School Theater Company will perform “Inherit the Wind” on Nov, 18, 19, and 20 at 7:30 p.m. All performances will be held in the Glen Rock High School’s all-purpose room located behind the middle school gym. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $7 for senior citizens and students up to age 18. The performers will once again present an evening of dining and theater for the Saturday evening performance (Nov. 20). Attendees may enjoy a catered dinner with friends and family in the GRHS cafeteria prior to the per- formance. Doors will open at 5 p.m. Tickets for the Nov. 20 dinner and performance are $25 for adults, and $20 for senior citizens and students up to age 18. General admission tickets are also available for this performance. Big Money Contest underway The Glen Rock High School Grad Ball of 2011 is sponsoring a Big Money Contest. One $15,000 grand prize will be awarded, along with 10 additional prizes of $500 each. Only 400 tickets will be sold. The cost for each ticket is $100. The winners will be announced at the Grad Ball 2011 Beefsteak Dinner and Fundraiser set for Nov. 20. The Beefsteak Dinner is the largest fundraiser for the graduation ball. This is the 53rd year of the tradition to provide a safe, alcohol-free, celebratory event for the graduating class.
