Page 16 THE VILLADOM TIMES II • November 17, 2010 Ridgewood Notes Interfaith Thanksgiving service set The Interfaith Religious Leaders of Ridgewood invite the community to celebrate Thanksgiving together at an interfaith service “Come to the Table of Plenty” on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, East Ridgewood Avenue at Hope Street. Representatives from the different religious traditions in town will help to set a table with symbols that signify hospitality. An interfaith choir will be directed by Tamara Freeman from Temple Israel and accompanied by Donna Dangler, music director at Emmanuel. Anyone wishing to practice with the choir may meet at the church at 6:15 p.m. prior to the service. The committee that planned this service includes Rev. Roberta Finkelstein, UU Society; Rev. Joan Conley, Saint Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church; Cantor Caitlin Bromberg, Temple Israel; and Rev. Linda Hart Green, host pastor. Emmanuel Baptist Church is ADA compliant. Holiday Marketplace coming up West Side Presbyterian Church will hold its first Holiday Marketplace on Saturday, Nov. 20 and Sunday, 21. The event will feature a wide variety of items, including hand-crafted jewelry, handmade note cards, hand-poured soy candles, natural soaps, folk art, olive wood sculptures, kitchen accessories, floral arrangements, and more. Hours will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday. On Nov. 20, the church will be collecting frozen turkeys and canned food items in the main parking lot off Dayton Street from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit Community Food Bank of New Jersey. Everything Diabetes Day announced Everything Diabetes Day will be held at the Ridgewood YMCA on Nov. 20 from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. The day will include information for adults and children with diabetes and for those at risk for diabetes. Everything Diabetes Day, a joint venture of the Ridgewood YMCA and the Diabetes Foundation, is a free event that will include blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, vision and foot screenings; and expert advice from professionals on nutrition, prevention, pre-diabetes, weight loss, physical activity, behavior change, complications, and signs and symptoms for those at risk. There will be opportunities to ask the experts about particular concerns. Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon. Representatives from Rite Aid will offer flu shots at the event. Advent Wreath Pot Luck Dinner planned Ministry of Motherhood (MOMs) will host an Advent Wreath Pot Luck Dinner on Sunday, Nov. 28 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church parish center. In addition to sharing a pot-luck meal, each family will make an Advent wreath and children will have the opportunity to participate in arts and crafts. Each family is asked to bring a dish that serves eight to 10 people in an aluminum tray. All materials for the wreaths and crafts will be provided. Nursery school hosts Open House West Side Nursery School, located at 6 South Monroe Street in Ridgewood, will hold Open Houses for prospective parents for 2011-12 on Friday, Nov. 19 and Thursday, Dec. 9 from 10 to 11 a.m. Eighteen classes are offered at the school, ranging from special “Parent and Me” classes for two-and-a-half-yearolds to five-day preschool classes for four-year-olds. Both morning and afternoon programs are available. Afternoon sessions end at 3:30 in order to accommodate the schedules of parents picking up older siblings in the public school system. Kindergarten enrichment classes are also available in morning or afternoon sessions. West Side Nursery School offers large, well-equipped classrooms and developmentally appropriate activities that encourage individual creativity, learning, and socialization. The curriculum includes daily play time on the halfacre playground, and weekly music and physical education sessions. Advent book discussion group forming A book discussion group will meet for four consecutive Tuesdays beginning Nov. 30 at Ridgewood’s Old Paramus Reformed Church. The program is open to the public. Preparing spiritually for Christmas, the book will be “While We Wait: Living the Questions of Advent,” by Mary Lou Redding, editorial director of The Upper Room devotional guide. A morning group will meet at 10:30 a.m., and the evening group at 7:30 p.m. The same material will be covered both times on any given date. Ridgewood Symphony to begin 71st season The Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra will begin its 71st season on Nov. 19 with a concert featuring guest artist Brittany Sklar in a performance of the “Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in D Major” by Johannes Brahms. The opening concert will include the Raklin-Busoni transcription of Bach’s “Chaconne,” and Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 7.” The concert will begin at 8 p.m. at Benjamin Franklin Middle School at East Glen and North Van Dien avenues in Ridgewood. Genealogical Society presents ‘Extraordinary Journey’ The Genealogical Society of Bergen County will present “The Extraordinary Journey: The Eastern Europeans of Northeastern Pennsylvania.” This video presentation is set for Monday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. at the Ridgewood Public Library, 125 North Maple Avenue, Ridgewood. Included in the documentary are interviews with Polish, Slovak, Ukrainian, Lithuanian, and Hungarian immigrants and their children, and scholars of this period in U.S. history. “The Extraordinary Journey” celebrates and preserves northeastern Pennsylvania’s eastern European heritage through a blend of first-person story telling, never-beforeseen images and insightful humanist commentary. Employment workshop scheduled Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church’s Career Resources Ministry, in its continuing effort to provide help to people seeking employment, will present the first of a four-part series of fall/winter workshops on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m. The workshop will be held in the meeting room in the lower church and is open to anyone seeking employment and those who anticipate possible unemployment. Parish membership is not required. Workshops are presented by the Career Resources Ministry, whose members are dedicated to helping those seeking employment. Professionals in the field will present the workshop and will be on hand to give advice.
